High school sports season about to begin

The 2018-19 high school sports season officially kicks off on Friday with the first day of girls golf practice.

Girls golf teams can begin playing in matches on Monday. Columbus East and Columbus North get going that day when both play in the Bloomington South Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. at Bloomington Country Club.

Practices for the seven other fall sports — football, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross-country and boys tennis — begin on Monday. Contests in all of those sports except football can begin on Aug. 13.

The football regular season starts Aug. 17. Teams may play in controlled scrimmages on Aug. 10.

Several area teams, including East and North, are playing in volleyball scrimmages on Aug. 9, and a few are playing in boys or girls soccer scrimmages or jamborees on Aug. 11.

Bull Dog scores a run

Recent Columbus North graduate Tyler Finke pinch ran in all three North-South All-Star Classic games last weekend and scored a run in the second, when he helped the South to an 8-4 victory on Sunday in South Bend.

Hauser graduate Sam Meek pitched a third of an inning for the South in the final game on Sunday, an 8-0 North victory. He allowed two hits and two walks and struck out one. Columbus East graduate Drew Hasson pinch hit in that third game and went 0 for 1.

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday, but were halted by rain with the North leading 8-4 in the fourth inning of the first game. They then played two seven-inning games on Sunday.
