Mass casualty drill to test first responders

Staff Reports

Emergency management teams from Bartholomew County and Columbus will train with other agencies at the fourth annual Trauma Camp, being held Friday through Sunday at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The training scenario will begin at dusk Saturday in the fair Grandstand, which will be occupied by about 100 volunteers. In the training scenario, some of the volunteer victims will require immediate medical attention for serious simulated injuries.

Before the training event, participants will take various classes and exercises covering critical areas such as incident command, triage and extrication. The training fulfills requirements for emergency medical technician re-certification.

Also participating will be Columbus Regional Health, the IU Health LifeLine helicopter and the Louisville & Indiana Railroad, whose main track runs along the east edge of the fairgrounds, including a grade crossing at Jonesville Road near the southeast entrance.

The Safety Train’s Smoke House, from the Firefighters Education and Training Foundation, will also be a part of the event. The Smoke House is a railroad boxcar modified by CSX featuring a 400-foot-long, three-level maze with obstacles, which firefighters traverse in zero visibility, with or without smoke.

During the exercises, Spear Street, which runs across the northern perimeter of the fairgrounds, will be closed.
