Free screening of 1961 film ‘Summer and Smoke’

IUPUC continues its fall film series with a free showing of “Summer and Smoke,” a 1961 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ 1948 play, at 3 p.m. Monday at YES Cinema, 328 Jackson St., Columbus.

The event is open to the public.

“Summer and Smoke” is directed by Peter Glenville and stars Laurence Harvey, Rita Moreno and Geraldine Page, who reprised her role of Alma from the play’s 1952 revival. Page’s portrayal of Alma, opposite Laurence Harvey as John, earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress in a leading role. Una Merkel was also nominated for best actress in a supporting role for playing her mother, and additional Oscar nominations went to art direction and Elmer Bernstein’s musical score.

IUPUC’s fall film series is part of a special topics course on Tennessee Williams and Film being taught this fall by Lisa Siefker-Bailey. The next film in the series will be “Baby Doll,” starring Eli Wallach and Carrol Baker, on Nov. 19.
