Olympians, Bull Dogs make All-State football teams

Four members of the regional champion Columbus East team have been named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 5A Senior All-State squad, while one Olympian and two Columbus North players have made the Junior All-State teams.

Defensive lineman Julian Greenwell, linebacker Nash Murphy, defensive back Jonah Wichman and punter Sam Thomasson made the 5A senior team. East junior wide receiver Dalton Back made the 5A Junior All-State team.

Meanwhile, North sophomore running back Blake Huffman and junior tight end Mitchel Collier are on the 6A Junior All-State squad.

Senior named East MVP

Senior wide receiver Cody Horner has been named MVP of the Columbus East football team.

Other awards went to Murphy (Defensive Player of the Year), senior Isaac VanCuren (Offensive Lineman of the Year), Back (Offensive Skill Player of the Year), Greenwell (Defensive Lineman of the Year), Wichman (Defensive Skill Player of the Year), Thomasson (Special Teams Player of the Year), senior Nick Law (Academic Excellence) and senior Dalton Anderson (Work Wins).

Olympians make All-State

Junior Lindsey Stoughton, who helped lead Columbus East to the Hoosier Hills Conference girls soccer title, has been named first-team All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

East senior Sarah Park and sophomore Alana Dwenger are on the second team. Olympian junior Emily Stiles is a third-teram selection.

Baseball players to sign

Two players from last year’s sectional champion Columbus East baseball team will participate in a signing ceremony at 3:30 p.m. today in the school’s commons.

Greenwell plans to sign with Wright State. Wichman plans to sign with South Carolina-Upstate.

East-Noblesville game canceled

The Noblesville at Columbus East boys basketball game that was postponed because of the Olympians’ success in football has been canceled after the two schools were unable to find a suitable makeup date.

Also, because of a home gymnastics meet that morning, Columbus East’s home girls basketball game against Madison on Jan. 19 has been moved back to a 2 p.m. junior varsity start. The varsity will follow at around 3:30 p.m.

The Olympian girls will host East Central on Monday in a makeup game from an earlier postponment. The JV will start at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at around 7:30 p.m.
