North wrestlers down Stars

The Columbus North wrestling team picked up plenty of momentum heading into tonight’s Conference Indiana Tournament when they defeated Bedford North Lawrence 48-25 on Thursday night.

"The guys are starting to believe in themselves and wrestle hard the whole match," North coach Matt Joyce said. "That’s something that we’ve been pushing a lot on this year — wrestling the whole six minutes."

Josh Nelson won his match via forfeit at 106 pounds, James Dwyer won by forfeit at 138 and Keandre Watson won by forfeit at 145 for the Bull Dogs.

With 113 being a double-forfeit, Morgan Smith moved up a weight class and won by pin in the first period at 120. Dallin Anderson won by pin at 152 in the first period for North. Adam Behling and Bradley Gutierrez both won their matches by a first-round pins at 220 and 285, respectively.

Nick Holt won his match at 182 for the Bull Dogs by a third-period pin.

Ashton Clark (126), Kamryn Denney (132) and Keegan Hill (195) all lost by pin for North. Jared Slocum lost by a 11-0 major decision at 160 ,and Hector De Dios lost by a 12-7 decision at 170.

"There’s been a steady progress across the board all year," Joyce said. "It’s been nice to see kids that have never wrestled before stepping in here and catching wins tonight. Not getting pinned and saving some team score has been big for us. It’s good to see them make that kind of progress."
