She’s unstoppable.

As a matter of fact, people often ask 73-year-old Nancy Conner why she can’t just stay still for even a second.

For Conner, a 2019 recipient of the Golden Hoosier service award, the answer comes easy.

Throughout her entire career as a speech and language therapist and later as an autism coordinator for local school districts, Conner dedicated herself to serving others. When she retired in 2016, she had to find fulfillment in other ways.

“I basically was a workaholic, so I wanted to do something that met the needs of others,” Conner said. “Because I was a workaholic, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to just kind of sit or even just do things to my pleasure. I truly wanted to do something for other people.”

Conner had served in multiple capacities at her church during the last 10 years as a greeter, a special needs ministry leader and as a Bible study fellowship leader. She knew, however, that she wasn’t done yet.

For two and a half years, Conner has volunteered at 11 different organizations across Columbus with one goal: “To feel as though I’m always contributing to others with whatever I’m doing.”
