Co-No. 5 Columbus North prevailed in a boys tennis battle of top-10 teams for a 3-2 victory Saturday against No. 8 Center Grove.

Nathan Lin beat Mason Runkle 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Adam Saad downed Dhrumil Patel 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (6-0). Matthew Liu and Joey Zhao topped Carson Contos and Landen Fincinson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

North’s Bhavey Jain fell to Luke Embery 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6) at No. 2 singles. Eamon Ma and Atharva Kute lost to Glen Swaney and Ryan Wiseman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Panthers down Mustangs

NEW WASHINGTON — Jennings County won three matches in straight sets and another by default Friday in a 4-1 victory at New Washington.

Owen Law beat Garrett Wilson 7-6 (5), 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Justin Ramey downed Colin Brown 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers. Joe Kelley and Jacob Vogel beat Sam Stricker and Jack Giltner 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Gage Gasper and Connor Cook (JC) won by default at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Wyatt St. John fell to AJ Walter 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.

Bull Dogs go 2-1

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North bounced back from a tough three-set loss in Saturday’s opener with a pair of three-set wins to go 2-1 in the North Central Invitational. The Bull Dogs fell to North Central 25-22, 24-26, 17-15 before beating Park Tudor 25-16, 19-25, 15-9 and Pendleton Heights 25-23, 19-25, 15-13.

Emma Tynan pounded 33 kills, Reagan Kane recorded 60 assists, Madison White had seven blocks, Jalynn Reardon tallied 33 digs and Kate Whaley served five aces to lead North (4-5).

Also for the Bull Dogs, Gabby Genth pounded 15 kills, Madi Roop added 13 kills and three blocks and Whaley had 17 assists and 14 digs. Sarah Bennett notched six blocks, Kane added 19 digs and three blocks, Tynan had 23 digs and three aces and Reardon and Sydney Cooper each served three aces.

East captures seventh

CLARKSVILLE — Columbus East lost to Roncalli 25-14, 20-25, 15-10 and Center Grove 25-14, 26-24 in pool play before beating Cathedral 25-21, 19-25, 15-11 and falling to Franklin 17-25, 25-20, 15-11 to finish seventh.

Rilee Jessee led the Olympians (5-3) with 24 kills and 31 digs. Kenzie Foster served five aces.

Also for East, Reece Whitehead added 11 kills and 24 digs. Foster notched 27 digs.

Crusaders stay unbeaten

MARTINSVILLE — Columbus Christian remained unbeaten with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 win Friday at Martinsville Tabernacle Christian.

Lauren Hunnicutt led the Crusaders (7-0) with three solo and two assist blocks and eight aces. Ellie Ridder pounded 10 kills, Hannah Stair recorded 21 assists and Kayla Jones tallied 12 digs.

Hunnicutt also added nine kills two digs, and Madison Henderson had seven kills and four digs. Hannah Stair notched one block assist, four digs and two aces; Ridder added one block assist and three digs; Emily Stair had five digs and three aces and Ann Marie Gandy pounded two kills.

Storm sweep Hawks

The Columbus Hawks came closer in each set Friday, but fell to the Northwest Storm 25-9, 25-16, 25-20.

McKiah Shearer led the Hawks (2-5) with nine assists, eight digs and three aces. Hailey Beth Rutledge and Abby Planalp each pounded four kills.

Also for the Hawks, Kailey Owen added five assists and three aces. Natalie Arnold had seven digs.

Cougars net runner-up

MONTGOMERY — Class A No. 2 Trinity Lutheran beat Northview 25-12, 25-9, Tecumseh 25-10, 25-17 and Christian Academy of Indiana 25-16, 25-16 in pool play before falling 2A No. 1 Barr-Reeve 25-12, 25-20 in the championship game of Saturday’s Barr-Reeve Invitational.

Bailey Reynolds led the Cougars (10-4) with 79 assists and six aces. Hannah Sabotin pounded 21 kills, Sydney Jaynes had seven blocks and Kamzi Gross tallied 27 digs.

Also for Trinity, Jaynes recorded 21 kills, and Kennedy Hoffman added 20 kills. Reynolds notched 18 digs, Elly Carter added 12 digs and Sabotin served four aces.

GIRLS golf

North takes seventh

NOBLESVILLE — No. 6 Columbus North finished seventh with a 324 in the Hall of Fame Classic Saturday at Purgatory Golf Club.

No. 1 Evansville North won with a 290, followed by No. 2 Homestead with a 293, No. 5 Zionsville 300, No. 3 Westfield 302, No. 4 Carmel 307 and co-No. 10 Center Grove 318.

Nathaly Munnicha tied for ninth individually with a 74 to lead the Bull Dogs. Annie Anderson carded a 79, Yestika Nischol added an 84, Ella Wilks shot 87 and Gwen Anderson had a 94.

Panthers finish sixth

Jennings County finished sixth with a 434 in Saturday’s Shelbyville Invitational at River View.

Sophie Curry led the Panthers with a 92. Ellie Hearne carded a 96, Emy Ralston added a 122, Abby Rowlett shot 124 and Lavanna Rickly had a 136.

Jennings was coming off a 191-231 loss to Greensburg Friday at St. Anne’s. Hearne led the Panthers with a 53, while Ralston added a 63 and Rowlett and Macie Cowan each shot 65.

Knights blank Olympians

NEWBURGH — Columbus East ran into one of the state’s top teams Saturday in a 4-0 loss at Class 3A No. 6 Castle.

The Knights outshot the Olympians (2-3-1) 10-6. Karisma Parker recorded two saves.

Jennings wins three

BLOOMINGTON — Baylee Byford recorded nine goals with three hat tricks in three games to lead Jennings County to a 3-0 record in the Hoosier Cup.

The Panthers opened the weekend with a 4-0 win over Indy Genesis on Friday. Byford netted three goals, and Morgan Lane added one. Averi Zamora, Katie Pappenheim and Byford had assists. Jennings outshot Genesis 20-4, with Kenna Maschino and Tori Lee each playing a half in goal and posting two saves.

On Saturday morning, the Panthers beat Edgewood 4-0. Byford scored three goals, and Zoey Ison added one. Morgan Lane and Jena Walker had assists. Jennings outshot the Mustangs 26-1, with Maschino playing the first half in goal and recording one save.

The Panthers (6-2) wrapped up the tournament Saturday afternoon with a 10-1 win over Bloomfield 10-1. Byford netted three goals; while Katie Pappenheim added two and Kayla Pappenheim, Sonya Miller, Grace Kirchner, Kerrigan Moore and Jena Walker all had one. Miller notched two assists, and Byford, Katie Pappenheim and Kalya Pappenheim all had one. Jennings outshot the Cardinals 18-1 and did not post a save.

Knights shut out Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County did not manage a shot Saturday in a 7-0 Western Indiana Conference loss to Northview.

The Knights put up 28 shots. Sarah Callahan recorded 21 saves for the Eagles (0-4, 0-2).

BOYS SOCCER

Crusaders play to tie

MARTINSVILLE — Columbus Christian outshot Martinsville Tabernacle Christian 23-11 Friday, but had to settle for a 0-0 tie.

Avery Hammond posted 10 saves for the Crusaders (0-2-1).

Panthers drop three

BLOOMINGTON — Jennings County went 0-3 in the Hoosier Cup Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, the Panthers fell to Martinsville 3-0 and Silver Creek 5-2.

Ethan Stidham and Dustin Andrew scored goals for Jennings (1-7) against Silver Creek. Jayden Vanosdol and Michael Pemberton had assists.

On Friday, the Panthers fell to the Center Grove JV 4-2. Gavin Gunn and Andrew scored goals, both off assists from Zane Law. Cameron Woodard recorded seven saves.

Knights nip Eagles

NASHVILLE — Caleb Yager scored two goals for Brown County Saturday, but Northview claimed a 3-2 WIC decision.

The Knights outshot the Eagles (1-4-1, 1-2-1) 17-15. Ethan Scott posted 14 saves.

CROSS-country

Jets finish fourth

ST. LEON — Hauser’s boys finished fourth in Division II with 107 points in Saturday’s East Central Invitational. Jac-Cen-Del won with 42.

Ryan Ault led the Jets with a second-place finish in 17 minutes, 54.4 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Noah Estes took 15th in 20:06.1, while Alex Bower was 22nd (20:29.7), Cameron Toole 31st (21:39.3) and Tanner Ault 37th (22:42.4).

Hauser had three girls runners, two less than the number needed to score as a team. Kaitlyn Everroad and Addison Jones finished 27th and 28th in 27:31.3 and 28:18.9, and Amy Haptonstall was 35th in 36:27.9.

Eagle girls take fourth

TERRE HAUTE — Brown County’s girls finished fourth and boys fifth in 1A-3A Division of Saturday’s Terre Haute Savings Bank State Preview at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross-Country Course.

Abby Fleetwood led the Eagle girls with a fifth-place finish in 20:49.9. Hadley Gradolf took seventh in 21:10.0, while Emma DeBord was 15th (22:24.7), Anna Fleetwood 19th (22:49.7) and Maris Wyman 38th (24:38.1).

Chase Austin finished sixth in 17:30.6 to lead the Brown County boys. Rafe Silbaugh took 21st in 18:49.7, while Cameron Fox was 36th (19:16.0), Rhett Silbaugh 51st (20:00.7) and Waylon Patrick 56th (20:07.0).

Eagles rout Redskins

NASHVILLE — Brown County scored twice on interception returns Friday in a 35-6 win against Indianapolis Manual.

Noah Carter completed 16 of 24 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown and ran for 51 yards and a score. Kody Walsh ran for 33 yards and a touchdown and had seven catches for 82 yards. Brandon Fleischman caught two passes for 59 yards and a touchdown and added two 2-point conversion receptions.

Fleischman also returned an interception 55 yards for a score. Nick Huls had two interceptions, including one for a 43-yard touchdown. Evan Asher added another interception.

The Eagles (2-1), who matched their win total from all of last season, allowed only 28 yards rushing.

“I thought we played very excellent defense,” Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. “Manual is a nice team, and I thought we did a good job containing their run game. We were really good swarming the ball. Offensively, we had another nice game by Noah Carter. Brandon Fleischman was kind of my Player of the Game. Alll in all, I was very pleased. It was another good step forward into showing what we can do.”

Stars stop Panthers

BEDFORD — Owen Deaton ran for three second-half touchwdowns and a 2-point conversion, but by that time, Jennings County trailed 30-0 in what would become a 50-21 Hoosier Hills Conference loss Friday at Bedford North Lawrence.

Deaton’s scoring runs covered 12, 5 and 6 yards, and he finished with 44 yards on seven carries. Lance Bailey ran for 79 yards on 15 carries, and Owen Deaton added 68 yards on 11 carries for the Panthers (1-2, 0-1).

Bailey completed 14 of 21 passes for 124 yards. Peyton Hayden recorded eight tackles, and Justin Brogdon had an interception to led the defense.

Tindley tops Cougars

GREENSBURG — Indianapolis Tindley took advantage of five South Decatur turnovers, scoring touchdowns on the first three of those to take a 20-0 lead, on its way to a 47-20 victory on Friday.

The Cougars (1-2) were whistled for 18 penalties, including 12 holding calls.

“The score doesn’t indicate how good a game it was, how close it was,” South Decatur coach Rick Zimmerman said.

Clayton McNealy carried 22 times for 184 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars. Wyatt Gatewood completed 6 for 10 passes for 71 yards and returned a fumble for the other South Decatur touchdown.
