NASHVILLE — Art will come to life today and Sunday when Columbus actress Jill Tasker portrays artist Marie Goth as part of opening weekend festivities for the latest exhibit at the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville.

“This is going to be a challenge,” Tasker said in an interview clip at browncountyartgallery.com, adding that she never has done a one-woman show before. “But I love challenges.”

The original production is all part of “Collector’s Showcase 2019: A Sitting with Marie” at the gallery, 1 Artist Drive in Nashville.

The showcase is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Brown County Art Gallery Foundation. Organizers borrow art from private collections and create an exhibit based around a theme. Because the paintings are privately owned, they are rarely seen by the public. They also represent some of the best work produced by the early Brown County art colony.

The 30-minute, one-act play, directed by Tasker’s husband, Doug Stender, like her an acting veteran, is called “A Sitting With Marie: Time for Sketches, Memories and a Pot of Tea.”

The play, written by gallery board president Lyn Letsinger-Miller, tells the story of Goth, known for her portraits, and the people she was closest to. Her relationship with V.J. Cariani is one of Brown County’s greatest love stories, according to organizers. It also tells of the love between her sister, Genevieve Goth Graf and Carl Graf, also artists.

The premise is that the audience represents a client coming for a sitting for a portrait. Goth is supposed to be sketching but instead shares the story of her life.

The exhibit features 50 paintings by these four artists and a full-color catalogue featuring the art work and articles about the history involved.
