A local teenager was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony Nov. 3 at First Lutheran Church.

Chase Jones, 16, is a junior at Columbus East High School and the son of Brian and Kim Jones. He joined Cub Scout Pack 557 in August 2011, and crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 557 in February 2014.

For his Eagle project, Chase constructed a fire pit and seating area at First Lutheran Church, where he attends.

Only about 4% of all Boy Scouts have ever attained the Eagle Scout rank, his father said.

Chase is the East marching band pit percussion co-section leader, and has received Gold ratings in both solo and ensemble contests.

This year he was part of the Exhibit Columbus High School Design Team Core Group and was an Indiana High School Architecture and Design Competition finalist.
