New BCSC social media policy tabled after teachers submit questions

A newly proposed policy that would place stricter guidelines on how Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. employees should conduct themselves on social media is generating lots of questions.

The social media policy, introduced by BCSC Superintendent Jim Roberts on Oct. 21, offers a definition of social media and guidelines for how employees should use it.

BCSC school board members were originally scheduled to vote on the final reading of the policy Monday, but Roberts said they decided to table the vote until Dec. 16 in order to answer questions and make revisions for clarity.

“Many of them were clarifying questions and what if’s: ‘If this policy is enacted, what does that look like? Who is monitoring it? What does progressive discipline look like? Is it retroactive?’ Questions like that,” Roberts said. “There were also just some clarifying questions around language, definitions, confidentiality … and a little confusion, maybe even concern about communication with students.”

Columbus Educators Association President Amy London said members of the CEA, which represents more than 400 BCSC teachers, submitted a list of questions to Roberts and the school corporation following the introduction of the policy in October.
