Two injured after vehicle overturns, catches fire

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Two people had minor injuries after an early-morning car accident at North County Road 500W and Lowell Road.

The accident was reported at 2:48 am. Wednesday, Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies said.

The driver was identified as Sara McCleary, 20, Columbus, and her passenger Cody Hyde, 23, Indianapolis. Both were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital by EMS to be treated for minor injuries.

Upon arrival, deputies found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames. While deputies were attempting to ascertain if anyone was in the vehicle, McCleary and Hyde approached on foot advising they were the ones who had been in the vehicle, deputies said. They had attempted to walk to a nearby house to call for help, but returned when they saw the emergency lights.

Deputies said the vehicle was traveling southbound on County Road 500W when the driver failed to properly navigate the curve in the roadway just north of West Lowell Road. The vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and overturned and then caught fire.

Columbus Township and Harrison Township firefighters put out the fire, deputies said.
