Investigation underway after apparent hunting accident death

Conservation officers are investigating an apparent hunting accident that resulted in the death of a Columbus man Sunday.

At approximately 8:57 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 9200 block of South State Road 58 after a hunter was found unresponsive by a family member after the hunter had failed to return home, said Lt. Angela Goldman, Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman.

Goldman said John Walker, 54, of Columbus, was found suffering from a gunshot wound, and that the initial investigation suggests it came from an accidental discharge of his firearm.

Walker was pronounced dead at the scene, and the exact cause of death is pending autopsy results, Goldman said.

Goldman said the investigation is ongoing.
