Commissioners approves traffic cameras reading license plates on vehicles entering the county

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County commissioners have approved placing traffic cameras that will record the license plates of vehicles entering the county on I-65 and U.S. 31 to be used for investigative purposes.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff Department requested four of the cameras which will cost $11,000. The cameras will read the license plates and compare them to a database looking for stolen vehicles, missing persons or in the cases of missing or abducted children.

The information is then sent to deputies patrolling in their vehicles.

The system will not be used for traffic enforcement, according to the sheriff department.
