Everton requires extra time to beat Barnsley 5-3, advance to League Cup 3rd round

BARNSLEY, England — Everton needed extra time to beat third-tier Barnsley 5-3 and reach the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday in another high-scoring game in the competition.

Belgium striker 's 78th-minute goal took the game into extra time at 3-3 as Everton recovered from going 2-0 down after 28 minutes.

An own goal and Lukaku's second goal of the match secured Everton a match against second-tier Reading.

Sunderland's 6-3 win over Exeter was the highlight on Tuesday, when the other second-round games were played.

Defender , a reported transfer target of Chelsea, played the full 120 minutes for Everton.

"I thought that was incredible under enormous pressure," Everton manager said. "I think that the authorities need to look at what has gone on."
