COLUMBUS, Indiana — The driver of a sport-utility vehicle, whose vehicle was propped up against a telephone pole after colliding with a pickup truck, was injured during a Sunday morning accident near the intersection of Washington Street and North National Road.
The accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m., said Roz Branom, a cashier at the Village Pantry Convenience Store, 3184 Washington St., who was at work when it happened.
The silver sport-utility vehicle ended up propped against the telephone pole adjacent to Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping, 3230 N. National Road, directly across from the convenience store.
“We heard it, and I was about to come out of the office to say, ‘What was that noise?’,” Branom said. “Just as I’m stepping out, this lady comes in and says, ‘Dial 911.'”
Branom then glanced across the street and saw the vehicle up the pole.
A red pickup truck was also involved, and the driver of that vehicle, Malcolm T. Burton, 49, Columbus, came out of his truck to check on the other driver, Branom said.
Columbus Police Department officers were the first to arrive, with Columbus Fire Department arriving soon after, she said.
The driver of the SUV — Anita M. Pope, 78, Columbus — who appeared to be injured — was lowered on a board after the fire department secured the vehicle, then taken for medical assistance by an ambulance, Branom said. She was treated at Columbus Regional Hospital and then transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
