This will be a big weekend for Columbus East and Columbus North athletes with two Conference Indiana and two Hoosier Hills Conference champions to be crowned.
Columbus East will be the favorite to win the HHC wrestling title. The 18th-ranked Olympians are the only ranked team in the field.
Host and three-time defending champion Jennings County could provide a challenge to the Olympians. Action will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Columbus North wrestlers will compete in the Conference Indiana Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at Perry Meridian. The second-ranked and host Falcons will be a heavy favorite.
North will host the Conference Indiana girls swim meet Saturday. Diving begins at 9 a.m., and swimming will start at 1 p.m. The Bull Frogs will look to challenge defending champion Bloomington South.
Also Saturday, East and Jennings will compete in the HHC girls swim meet at Bedford North Lawrence. Diving prelims begin at 6 p.m. today, and the swimming and diving finals will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Floyd Central will be the favorite.
The Conference Indiana and HHC boys swim meets will be Jan. 28. All local wrestling teams will compete in the Jennings County Sectional that day.
North diver wins invite
Columbus North’s Kaemon Jiles won Saturday’s Bloomington North Diving Invitational. The senior scored 427.2 points to win by 1.45 over Ben Rader of Greenfield-Central.
North’s Grant Fehribach finished seventh with 285.15 points. Arturo Contreras was 14th with 114.05 points.
In the girls competition, North’s Sarah Towsley finished 10th with 216.7 points. Emma Wilson took 13th with 189.1, and junior Madi Grimes was 14th with 175.3.
East senior commits
Columbus East senior offensive tackle Jared Clark has committed to play football at Hillsdale College.
Clark was a Class 5A Senior All-State selection by the Indiana Football Coaches Association and a 5A honorable mention pick by the Associated Press. He helped lead the Olympians to a 13-2 record and a 5A state runner-up finish this season.
Contests rescheduled
The Columbus North at Seymour wrestling match, which was postponed because of weather last week, has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. today.
Also, the Seymour at Columbus East girls basketball game that was postponed the same night will now be Jan. 28. The junior varsity game will begin at 11 a.m., with the varsity to follow at around 12:30 p.m.
Girls draw set for Sunday
The IHSAA girls basketball tournament draw will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The draw originally was scheduled for Jan. 22, but was moved up a week because of programming conflicts with its radio and television network partners.
The draw will air on Fox Sports Indiana, as well as the IHSAA Champions Radio Network. Columbus North girls coach Pat McKee will be one of the hosts of the TV program on FSI.
