Golf scramble fundraisers set

Golf scramble season is almost here, and two new scholarship fundraisers this month dot the local calendar.

The Inaugural Chuck Wilt Youth Scholarship Fundraiser will be May 19 at Greenbelt, provided at least nine teams are signed up by Friday. If not, the tournament will be pushed back until fall.

Wilt was Parks director for more than 30 years and now lives in Florida. He started the youth scholarship program, which was renamed after him.

Last year, the Columbus Parks Foundation awarded $17,000 in youth scholarships for kids to participate in programs. This year, director of parks and recreation Mark Jones and director of sports for parks and recreation Nikki Murphy came up with the idea of a golf scramble.

“Every year, we try to do some small fundraisers here and there to replenish the fund,” Jones said. “We felt it was kind of a win-win with the golf scramble. We can show off our Greenbelt Golf Course and raise a little money for the scholarship.”

Meanwhile, the Inaugural Steve Antcliff Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Outing will be May 26 at Otter Creek.

Antcliff was an engineer for Cummins and coached little league baseball and soccer and participated in golf leagues. He died last summer at the age of 48.

“When people started to say, ‘What do we do? How can I help?’ I decided to start a scholarship in his name,” said his widow, Rachelle Antcliff. “He knew education can transform lives, and he was an avid golfer, so a golf outing seemed like a natural thing to do.”

Several other golf scrambles in the coming weeks will serve as fundraisers for various programs or scholarships. The fire department’s Chief Miller Memorial Outing on May 24 will benefit Hospice.

The 32nd Annual DSI Golf Classic will be June 7 at Otter Creek. Proceeds will benefit toddlers at risk of delays and children with special needs.

The Face to Face Golf Classic will be June 13 at Otter Creek. Proceeds will benefit Face to Face ministries.

The 32nd Annual Andy Critzer Memorial Golf Tournament will be June 16 at Otter Creek. Proceeds will benefit Heritage Fund Scholarships.
