East tops North in dual golf match

Otter Creek Golf Course experienced a few sprinkles on Thursday, but the rain held off long enough for the Columbus East and Columbus North boys golf teams to finish all 18 holes.

Freshman Kody Reynolds helped the Olympians post their best score of the season by earning medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. East won the match 319 to 328 after finishing 24 strokes behind the Bull Dogs in the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational on Saturday.

“We’re improving — that’s the main thing,” East coach Tom LaBarbera said. “Obviously, a great round by Kody shooting 1-over-par today on a challenging course. For a freshman in his first match between East and North that’s very exciting for him. A 73 is just really strong.”

Mark Mayhew and Adrian Adams followed behind with 78s, while Avery Foist and Leyton Erfmeier both shot 90 for the Olympians. Cole Schaefer had a 106.

“We still have to continue to work,” LaBarbera said. “We still have a long way to go, but we’re seeing some good things.”

North coach Doug Bieker said he liked the way Drew Smith responded after a rough start in his first three holes. Smith had a tough third hole that put him 5-over-par after the first three, and he managed to recover for a 3-over-par 75.

Henry Kiel shot an 81, Luke VanDeventer ended with an 85 and Jacob Niebalski had an 87 for the Bull Dogs. Reese Moore carded a 90, and Cameron Ziegler finished with a 92.

“Certainly not as good as we would have hoped,” Bieker said. “Coming in, we had made positive steps the last couple of weeks I think in matches and in tournaments, and then we certainly didn’t show up ready to play tonight. We’ve got time. It’s still early May, and we’ll come back. We’ve got a good chance Saturday (at the Spring Preview at Prairie View) to see how good we are against the best in the state.”
