Lancers’ win streak ends at five

EDINBURGH — The five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt for Edinburgh’s baseball team Friday.

Seymour collected 19 hits in a 14-6, six-inning win against the Lancers.

In the first inning, a hit by the Owls’ Michael Knecht scored both Alan Perry and Takumi Nishiwaki to give Seymour a 2-0 lead. The Lancers got on the board in the second, with Zach Giles pelting a solo homer over the right-center field fence.

Following a scoreless third inning, the Owls tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Knecht led off by hitting his first career varsity home run, to right-center field, before Devin Hill got on base with a double and Matthew Moore hit an RBI-single.

Leading 4-1, the Owls put it on the Lancers in the fifth inning. Ty McCory and Knecht each had RBI hits before Devin Hill’s single scored two to put Seymour up 8-1. With two out, Moore and Perry each went up to the plate and hit RBI-singles.

“The wheels came off,” Edinburgh coach Jason Burton said. “A few errors got stuck in our heads, and then we couldn’t get it done at the plate. Seymour’s a good team, but I didn’t think we were playing that bad in the beginning of the game. We saw what happens when we get into our own heads.”

In the sixth, Jake Roberts, Hill, Moore and Perry each hit RBIs to extend the Owls’ lead to 13 runs. Braden Christopher picked up the win on the mound, putting in four innings of work.

Coltan Henderson took the loss for the Lancers (8-7), tossing five innings. Edinburgh had five errors and finished with four hits.

“Our kids just need confidence at the plate,” Burton said. “It doesn’t matter who we see, we need to know we can hit the ball every time we got to the box.”
