Jets start fast, stopped by lightning

RISING SUN — Class A No. 7 Hauser’s hot start in the first round of the Rising Sun softball sectional against Oldenburg came to a halt when lighting struck in the top of the second inning and continued to strike, causing the game to be postponed until 5:30 p.m. today.

The game paused in the middle of Hunter Crain’s at bat with two out in the top of the second inning. The Jets already had scored four runs in the first and two in the second to go up 6-0 on Oldenburg Academy.

The first run was scored when Sydney Schoen got on base with an error that allowed Mykenzie Ault to reach home plate. Pitcher Tessa Sims got on base with an RBI-single, followed by another RBI-single from Shelby Fugate. Katie Taylor’s RBI-double put the Jets up 4-0 at the end of one.

Hauser went through its entire batting lineup in the inning. The other two runs came from Fugate’s two-run double in the top of the second. Sims retired all three batters she faced in the first, including one on a strikeout.

“I liked our energy the way they came out ready to play,” Hauser coach Craig Sims said. “I thought our warmup was good. I thought they came out and made a statement right out of the gate. Now, we’ve just got to continue that momentum for seven innings and carry it on throughout the postseason.”

The semifinals, which were originally to be played today, have been moved to Wednesday. If the Jets hang on to beat Oldenburg, they would play North Decatur at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. South Decatur and Jac-Cen-Del will follow that game Wednesday, and the title game still will be on Thursday.
