Driver disregards school bus stop arm, arrested

A local woman was arrested after she was accused of passing a school bus full of children on Jonesville Road that had extended its stop arm to let children off the bus.

Columbus Police Officer Eric Kapczynski was traveling south in the 700 block of Jonesville Road at 2:50 p.m. Monday when the school bus full of children stopped in front of him, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Kapczynski said the bus stop arm was extended and its lights were flashing red when a white passenger car disregarded the stopped school bus and continued north on Jonesville Road.

Kapczynski stopped the car a short time later and identified the driver as Lyzette B. Torres, 30, of 2330 Sims Court, Harris said.

Torres was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license and reckless driving — disregarding a bus stop arm, jail officials said.

She has been released from the Bartholomew County Jail, although a bond amount was not provided with the arrest information, jail records indicate.
