1-2 Finish / Bull Dogs, Olympians take top two spots in golf sectional

GREENSBURG — Columbus North and Columbus East took the top two spots in the Greensburg boys golf sectional Friday at Greensburg Country Club.

The Bull Dogs walked away with the trophy after posting a 309, and the Olympians finished four strokes behind with a 313. Hauser finished eighth with a 379.

Both Columbus school advance to the Providence Regional that will be played Thursday at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryille.

“We came out and played pretty well for the most part,” North coach Doug Bieker said. “Some of these guys are still new to the sectional. With that inexperience comes some nerves I think, and they came out and settled down.”

East freshman Kody Reynolds won medalist honors with an even-par 70 in his first high school sectional. East coach Tom LaBarbera said Reynolds stepped on the first tee thinking he would be medalist and praised him for getting it done.

“It’s the first time in a while that my game has come in, and I’ve played pretty well,” Reynolds said. “I left a few strokes out there, but an even-par, I’m pretty pleased with that.”

The top golfer for North was Drew Smith, who carded a 73, and Henry Kiel was one stroke behind him with a 74. Jackson Kerber shot an 80, Cameron Zeigler had an 82 and Jacob Niedbalski finished with an 86.

The second East golfer was Mark Mayhew at 78, followed by Avery Foist at 81. Leyton Erfmeier finished with an 84, and Adrian Adams had an 86.

“At the turn, we were right there,” LaBarbera said. “We lost a few strokes on the back, and that’s what made the difference. Kudos to North. They pulled through and won sectional. That was great that is stays in Columbus, and North is very well deserving.”

Hauser’s Justin Compton was one stroke away from qualifying as an individual. The top three golfers from non-qualifying teams advance to the regional, and there was a four-way tie for the third spot.

Compton, who carded an 83, had to participate in a playoff with three other individuals on the first hole. His first swing went a bit too far left, and he ended with a bogey.

“I was feeling pretty confident, but there was a little nerves,” Compton said. “The last hole on my round, I hit my driver pretty well, so I felt good with that going off of the tee and just got an unlucky bounce.”

Other golfers for the Jets were Sm Johnson with an 86, Ethan Wallace with a 98, Matt Sweet with a 112 and Justin Stafford with a 141. Hauser coach Mike Compton said he was aiming for a team score of 400, so he was happy with how the Jets performed.
