Columbus set for another big weekend of softball

The final games for the C division of the USSSA fastpitch softball state tournament were rained out last weekend, but fans can expect a rain-free weekend for the A and B divisions that kick off Friday afternoon in Columbus and Edinburgh.

Three Columbus-based teams were all set to play on Sunday with a shot at a championship-game appearance still intact before mother nature rained on the party for two of the three squads.

All three teams won both of their pool play games, and the Indiana Red Alert 10U-Stodgsdill team had won all four of its tournament games. It was looking to advance closer to the championship with a game against Elite Back 07 from Plainfield up next before the cancellation occurred. The 10U and 8U divisions didn’t get to finish, so no state champions were decided.

Southern Indiana Impact 04 would have been knocked down to the losers bracket of the 13U and forced to win out after losing its second bracket game to Team Indiana 04. However, the losers bracket had to be canceled because of the rain, which forced that game to be regarded as the championship. Southern Indiana Impact 04 finished runner-up with a 3-1 record for the weekend.

Southern Indiana Impact Matern also finished 3-1, but was one of the teams that was eliminated after the loser’s bracket had to be canceled. There were still two teams left standing in the 14U and 12U divisions after the rain hit, and they were recognized as co-champions.

USSSA state director Tim Foster praised the Parks and Rec staff for their help with the tournament.

“The Parks and Rec are such great people. They just worked their tails off getting the fields ready,” Foster said.

Seven of the 211 competing teams in this weekend’s A and B division tournament will be from Columbus, with one coming from Hope. Indiana Hustle from Hope will be playing in the 18U-A division.

The seven Columbus teams are Southern Indiana Impact competing in the 18U-B division, Indiana Nitro in the 16U-B, Demand Command and Red Alert in the 14U, Southern Indiana Impact Matern and Southern Indiana Impact 05 in the 12U-B and Red Alert Davidson in the 10U-B.

Games will begin at 2 p.m. Friday and will be played on 29 fields between Lincoln Park, Clifty Park, Dunn Stadium, Southside Elementary, Ceraland and the Edinburgh Sports Complex. Games will continue all day Saturday and will conclude on Sunday.
