Janes pleads guilty to Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent

A Bartholomew County man has agreed to plead guilty to endangering the life of a 3-year-old in his care by driving under the influence of marijuana and having loaded guns in his vehicle while transporting the girl.

Joshua Janes, 33, of 4303 Roosevelt St., Columbus, pleaded guilty Monday in Bartholomew Circuit Court to felony neglect of a dependent, a Level 6 felony — the lowest in Indiana.

Judge Kelly Benjamin set sentencing for 2 p.m. Sept. 13 and ordered Janes to report to the county’s probation department for a pre-sentence investigation.

A plea bargain in the case states the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s office is agreeing to a sentence of 2 and 1/2 years for Janes, all suspended, to be served on probation, according to court records.

If the suspended sentence is successfully completed, the prosecutor’s office agrees that judgment of conviction would be reduced to a Class A misdemeanor, with a special condition, according to court records.

The special condition of probation is that Janes is required to undergo an alcohol and drug evaluation, comply with any recommended treatment and that he transfer ownership of all firearms, ammunition and other firearm supplies and accessories so that he has none of these items in his possession during probation, court records state.
