Two arrested after U.S. 31 traffic stop

A traffic stop on southbound U.S. 31 near Lowell Road led to the arrest of two people on drug-related charges.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Sgt. Kris Weisner stopped a vehicle driven by Caren Lea-Ann Piper, 26, of Seymour at 10:37 p.m. Wednesday, deputies said.

Weisner was speaking with Piper and passenger Christian Najera, 21, of 4972 N. County Road 150W, Columbus, when deputy Dustin Newland saw drug-related paraphernalia inside the vehicle, deputies said.

K9 Bolt alerted to narcotics inside the vehicle and a search revealed methamphetamine, marijuana and nine methamphetamine pipes, deputies said.

Piper was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a driver’s license, deputies said.

Najera was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of paraphernalia.

Piper and Najera were released from the Bartholomew County Jail under the county’s pretrial detention program allowing defendants to be released without having to post bond.
