East posts two shutouts

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus East posted a pair of shutouts in the North Central Invitational, beating Heritage Christian 4-0 on Friday and Class A No. 3 Lafayette Central Catholic 2-0 on Saturday.

Lindsey Stoughton scored two goals, and Sarah Park and Elena Stoughton each added one against Heritage Christain. Alana Dwenger and Maya Federle had assists. Karisma Parker recorded one save, and Erin McIntyre played the final 10 minutes in goal to finish the shutout.

Against LCC, Sarah Park and Jaeda Berkemeier scored the goals for the Olympians (6-1), while Dwenger and Federle had assists. Parker recorded three saves, and McIntyre played the final few minutes in goal to finish the shutout.

Bull Dogs bounce Braves

TERRE HAUTE — Tanner Johnson scored three goals, and Caroline Hollenkamp added two goals and an assist Saturday to lead Columbus North to a 6-1 Conference Indiana win at Terre Haute South.

Johnson scored off an assist from Lauryn Whitney in the fifth minute before Nitya Chenanda and Johnson added unassisted goals in the 10th and 22nd minutes. Hollenkamp scored off an assist from Morgan Blankenhorm in the 30th minute, and the Bull Dogs (5-1, 1-0) led 4-0 at halftime.

After the Braves scored in the 57th minute, Hollenkamp assisted on a Johnson goal in the 58th minute, and Hollenkamp added the final goal unassisted in the 73rd minute.

Kaylyn Bates recorded one save in goal.

Panthers win 1 of 3

BLOOMINGTON — beat South Knox 2-0 on Friday and fell to Richmond 1-0 and Bloomington South 4-0 on Saturday in the Hoosier Cup.

Katie Pappenheim and Naomi Beal scored the goals against South Knox. Beal and Baylee Byford had assists. Kenna Maschino recorded one saves.

Maschino posted seven saves against Richmond. Maschino had 13 saves, Tori Lee added five saves and Faith Robertson posted three saves for the Panthers (4-2) against Bloomington South.

Brown County goes 0-2-1

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County tied Genesis United 2-2 on Friday and fell to West Vigo 4-0 and Washington 7-0 on Saturday in the Hoosier Cup.

Isabel Rygiel and Gabby Bethards scored unassisted goals against Genesis. Hannah Hummel recorded 14 saves.

Hummel posted 11 saves, and Skylar Fleischman added seven against West Vigo. Fleischman had 14 saves, and Hummel added one for the Eagles (0-4-1) against Washington.

Late goals lift North

TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North scored two goals in the final four minutes to pull out a 4-2 win Saturday at Terre Haute South.

The Bull Dogs (2-4, 1-1) used a Graham Keele goal off an Ernesto Perez assist in the 39th minute and an Andrew Goble header off a Sotaro Kaneda assist in the 66th minute to take a 2-0 lead. But the Braves scored in the 72nd and 73rd minutes to tie the game.

Kurt Nusterer scored off an assist from Zach Friend in the 77th minute to give North the lead back. Keele followed with a goal off a Fraser Swan assist in the 78th minute.

Noah Kestler recorded four saves.

Panthers go 0-3

BLOOMINGTON — Jennings County fell to Merrillville 5-0 on Friday and lost to Whiteland 7-0 and Bloomington North 4-0 in the Hoosier Cup.

Dreagen Ison recorded 19 saves against Merrillville. Ison posted 12 saves, and Carson McNulty added three saves against Whiteland. Ison had eight saves for the Panthers (0-7) against Bloomington North.

Eagles fall three times

BLOOMINGTON — Brown County fell to Bloomington Lighthouse Christian Academy 4-1 and fell to Genesis United 7-0 and New Castle 7-1 on Saturday in the Hoosier Cup.

Will Normile scored off an assist from Logan Huddleston. Jeffrey Carlberg recorded 19 saves.

Carlberg recorded 20 saves against Genesis and 19 saves against New Castle. Caleb Yeager scored the goal for the Eagles (1-6) off a free kick against New Castle.

Bull Dogs take second

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North went 2-1 Saturday to finish second in the North Central Invitational. The Bull Dogs fell to North Central 25-21, 25-20 before beating Park Tudor 11-25, 25-19, 15-13 and Connersville 25-7, 14-25, 15-11.

Emma Tynan pounded 25 kills, Sophie McKinney recorded 27 assists, Lauryn James had three solo and five assist blocks and Maddy Sebahar notched 38 digs to lead the Bull Dogs (4-5). Agustina Fainguersch, Sebahar, Tynan and Lily Meyercord all served three aces.

Olympians finish 0-4

CLARKSVILLE — Columbus East went 0-4 in Saturday’s Providence Invitational, falling to Roncalli 25-20, 25-17; Center Grove 25-21, 25-8; Cathedral 22-25, 25-18, 17-15 and Brownstown Central 25-16, 25-17.

Allison Mack pounded 24 kills, Mady Foster recorded 73 assists, CJ Clausen had six blocks, Keeleigh Kikendall notched 34 digs and Cadence Gilley served four aces to lead the Olympians (3-9).

Also for East, Clausen added 16 kills and Reece Whitehead had 14 kills. Rilee Jessee tallied four blocks, Foster contributed 27 digs and Mack added 26 digs and two aces.

Eagles win in five

NASHVILLE — Brown County rallied from a two-set deficit to pull out its sixth consecutive win, a 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-6 triumph against Greensburg on Saturday.

Mekenzie Dunnuck pounded 17 kills, Maggie Redmond recorded 25 assists, Baelyn Koester notched 23 digs and Marley Nickles served five aces to lead the Eagles (8-1). Abigail Hollander added 23 assists and four aces, and Nickles had eight kills and 21 digs.

Panthers claim second

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County bounced back from a 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 loss to Scottsburg to beat Pike 12-25, 20-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-5 in Saturday’s Jennings Invitational.

Mary Leahigh pounded 13 kills, Abi Vogel had 14 blocks, Hanah Bertram notched 25 digs and Karlee Madinger served six aces to lead the Panthers (3-11). Liz Ertel recorded 10 assists against Scottsburg, and Madinger had 18 assists against Pike.

Trinity splits matches

MONTGOMERY — Trinity Lutheran went 2-2 in Saturday’s Barr-Reeve Invitational. The Cougars beat Heritage Hills 25-20, 25-20 and Indianapolis Lutheran 25-13, 25-13 and fell to Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve 25-11, 26-24 and Lexington (Kentucky) Tates Creek 25-22, 25-22.

Hannah Sabotin led Trinity (8-7) with 37 kills and 34 digs. Bailey Reynolds recorded 70 assists, and Abby Schult had seven blocks.

Crusaders fall in five

CROTHERSVILLE — Columbus Christian had a match point leading 14-13 in the fifth set Friday night, but Crothersville rallied for a 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 16-14 victory.

Hannah Stair led the Crusaders (6-1) with 38 assists, 19 digs and 13 aces. Lauren Hunnicutt recorded 14 kills and eight digs, and Madison Henderson added 12 kills and 17 digs.

Also for Columbus Christian, Mayah Schundelmier notched 11 kills and four aces, and Michaela Schundelmier had five kills and 17 digs. Kayla Jones added 11 digs.

Trojans blank Bull Dogs

GREENWOOD — No. 16 Columbus North took its first loss of the season Saturday, a 5-0 setback at No. 5 Center Grove.

Kevin Lin fell to Trey Thixton 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Bhavey Jain lost to Mitch Runkle 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Joey Zhao fell to Mason Runkle 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (4-1).

North’s Adam Saad and Nathan Lin lost to Grant Herron and Nic Ballesteros 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Matthew Liu and Eamon Ma fell to JT Embery and Dhrumil Patel 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

CROSS-country

Eagle boys take third

TERRE HAUTE — Brown County finished third in the 1A-3A boys division of the Terre Haute Savings Bank Preview at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the state finals.

West Vigo won the event with 81 points. Sullivan finished second with 92, and the Eagles scored 110.

Brown County’s Marino Dolph and Jackson McPheeters finished second and third in 17 minutes, 36.8 seconds and 17:56.0 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Brandon Leslie took 28th in 20:26.5, while Cameron Fox was 33rd (20:40.0) and Josh Parry 44th (21:16.7).

The Eagles did not have enough girls to score as a team. Eme Koester finished third in 21:35.0, while Anna Fleetwood was fifth (21:56.4) and Maris Wyman 17th (23:27.4).

Hauser girls net fifth

ST. LEON — Hauser’s girls finished fifth with 119 points in the Division II portion of Saturday’s East Central Invitational. South Ripley won with 29.

Tammy Essex led the Jets with a 12th-place finish in 26:05.6. Addison Jones took 18th in 27:53.4, while Leah Joyce was 29th (33:50.2), Lexi Tallent 31st (37:27.6) and Ninel Garcia-Sims 32nd (38:20.3).

Hauser did not have enough boys runners to score as a team. Ryan Ault and Emils Vigants finished second and third in 18:51.7 and 19:28.6, and Thomas Essex was 19th in 23:15.6.

Panthers drop HHC opener

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County was within 14-7 midway through the first quarter Friday, but New Albany pulled away for a 55-17 win in the Hoosier Hills Conference opener.

Levi Peacock scored on a 1-yard-run in the first quarter, and Dylan Boswell kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Panthers (1-2, 0-1), who trailed 48-10 at halftime. Peyton Hayden scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“They killed us with their speed,” Jennings coach Rick Zimmerman said.

Eagles fall to Cadets

CLAYTON — Brown County opened its Western Indiana Conference season Friday with a 42-20 loss at Cascade

Noah Carter threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Griff Kelly and then ran for a 2-point conversion in the second quarter, but the Eagles (1-2, 0-1) trailed 21-8 at halftime. Carter threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Jordan Oswald in the third quarter, and a Malachi Nickels 72-yard run set up a Nickles 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Carter finished 18 for 31 for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Huls had six catches for 104 yards.

“(Cascade is) a good team,” Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. “They’re a big team, strong up front, and we just could not stop their run. We got behind and just couldn’t catch up.”
