Olympians win Center Grove Classic

GREENWOOD — The Class 3A No. 15 Columbus East girls soccer team beat a pair of ranked teams Saturday to win the Center Grove Classic.

The Olympians upset 3A No. 9 Center Grove 2-0 in the morning. Alana Dwenger and Maya Federle scored goals, and Sarah Park and Lindsey Stoughton had assists. Karisma Parker recorded 10 saves.

East (13-2) also won 2-0 in the afternoon against Class A No. 12 Oldenburg Academy. Park and Elena Stoughton scored goals, and Dwenger and Kathleen Soedel had assists. Parker posted two saves in 70 minutes, and Erin McIntyre did not face a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes.

Eagles fall to Vikings

NASHVILLE — Brown County finished sixth in the Western Indiana Conference after falling to West Vigo 5-0 Saturday in the fifth-place game.

The Eagles fell to 3-8-1.

BOYS Tennis

North blanks Dragons

No. 15 Columbus North won four matches in straight sets Saturday in a 5-0 win against Silver Creek.

Kevin Lin beat Jake Teegarden 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Bhavey Jain downed Grant Miller 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Eamon Ma topped Jacob Bishop 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (9-3).

North’s Adam Saad and Nathan Lin beat Jack Hawkins and Jackson Jacob 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Joey Zhao and Matthew Liu downed Nate Eckert and Kooper Jacobi 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Hauser second in Classic

HOPE — Hauser beat Morristown 5-0 and lost to Waldron 3-2 Saturday to finish runner-up in the Hauser Classic.

Ethan Wallace at No. 1 singles and Tyler Moore and Caleb Hoover at No. 2 doubles went 2-0 for the Jets (7-4). Sean Miller at No. 2 singles, Keagan Miller at No. 3 singles and Jacob Luken and Aaron Mee at No. 1 doubles all went 1-1.

Panthers finish fourth

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jennings County finished fourth in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament after falling 4-1 at Jeffersonville in Friday’s third-place match.

Joe Kelley and Wyatt St. John scored the point for the Panthers (2-11), beating Kyle Lemon and Louis Scheuller 7-5, 1-6, (10-7) at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Thomas Schuler fell to Giovanni Guazzo 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Kyle Tempest lost to Matthew Monroe at No. 2 singles, and Chad Gasper lost to Charley Williams at No. 3 singles by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Weston Miller and Kent Biehle fell to Blake Winchell and Colby Kayrouz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

CROSS-country

North teams take third

The Columbus North boys finished third at Saturday’s New Haven Invitational at Purdue-Fort Wayne, and the Bull Dog girls took third in Shelbyville’s Golden Bear Invitational at Blue River Park.

The No. 19 North boys edged No. 9 Fort Wayne Carroll 119-120 to finish third behind No. 1 Bloomington South (84) and No. 8 Homestead (102). The No. 12 Bull Dog girls scored 87 points to finish behind No. 3 Brebeuf Jesuit (32) and New Palestine (80).

John Sluys led the North boys with a 10th-place finish in 16 minutes, 14.4 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Sam Horak took 12th in 16:18.6, while Rishi Poludasu was 23rd (16:35.9), Matt Newell 39th (16:52.6), Collin Pruitt 48th (16:59.0), Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff 63rd (17:09.8) and Evan Carr 67th (17:13.9).

Olivia Morlok finished fourth in 18:52.3 to lead the Bull Dog girls. Mackenzie Barnett took seventh in 19:27.2, while Aric Tong was ninth (19:47.7), Sydney Geckler 15th (20:13.3), Abbey Landini 19th (20:34.2), Ella Anderson 21st (20:40.2) and Abby Jacobi 27th (21:04.6).

East girls finish third

BEDFORD — Columbus East’s girls finished third in Bedford North Lawrence’s Ted Fox Invitational on Saturday. No. 24 Edgewood won with 56 points to 61 for Terre Haute South and 109 for the Olympians.

Olivia Linnemann led East with an eighth-place finish in 20:20.91. Jordan Spurgeon took 19th in 21:17.42, while Elizabeth Stevens was 24th (21:29.94), Amanda Pottorff 27th (21:38.90) and Olivia Shoaf 35th (21:51.51).

The Olympian boys finished ninth with 298 points. No. 17 Bloomington North won with 43.

Garrett McGaha finished 41st in 17:48.32 to lead East. Nick Walter took 47th in 18:12.26, while Tyler Hertle was 61st (18:35.63), Ryan Sadtler 74th (19:04.54) and Cameron Stevens 75th (19:06.03).

Panthers sweep Classic

HANOVER — Jennings County’s boys and girls both scored 28 points in sweeping Madison’s Duke Meyer Classic on Saturday. New Albany finished second with 68 points in the boys meet, and Silver Creek took second with 45 in the girls meet.

Carter Leak won the boys race in 16:39. Alex Hendrix finished third in 16:46, while Gavin Hendrix was sixth (17:09), Lane Elsner seventh (17:10) and Logan McIntosh 11th (17:33).

Emma Morrison won the girls race in 19:46.5. Ashley Heindel finished third in 21:04.3, while Kaylee Ebinger was fifth (21:25.0), Heather Sea ninth (21:48.4) and Liz Wahlman 10th (22:14.2).

Eagle boys claim 12th

CULVER — Brown County’s boys finished 12th with 254 points in the Open Division of Saturday’s Culver Academies Invitational. New Prairie won with 57.

Marino Dolph led the Eagles with an eighth-place finish in 17:06.8. Jackson McPheeters took 11th in 17:16.2, while Brandon Leslie was 52nd (18:15.9), Cameron Fox 99th (19:15.3) and Josh Parry 119th (20:04.8).

Brown County had three girls compete in the Open race. Eme Koester finished eighth in 20:42.8, while Anna Fleetwood took 56th (22:05.6) and Maris Wyman was 69th (22:27.6).

Cougars edge Bull Dogs

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North played Bloomington North to a scoreless tie the first 60 minutes, but the Cougars scored in the 61st to claim a 1-0 Conference Indiana win.

Noah Kestler recorded six saves for the Bull Dogs (6-9-1, 2-3).

Hauser is runner-up

SEYMOUR — Hauser beat Trinity Lutheran 4-2 in the semifinals before falling to Southwestern (Hanover) 2-1 Saturday in the championship game of Trinity’s Cougar Cup.

Sam Johnson netted three goals, and Justin Stafford added one against Trinity. Adam Kollers, Logan Hankins and Stafford assists. Kameron Lawson posted nine saves, and defender Joe Hunter added one save.

Johnson scored off an assist from Alec Lopez against Southwestern. Lawson recorded 18 saves for Hauser (7-5).

Vikings nip Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County led 2-1 in the first half Saturday, but West Vigo rallied for a 3-2 win in the WIC third-place game.

Will Normile scored off an assist from Ricky Stanley and Caleb Yeager converted a free kick for the Eagles (3-10). Jeffrey Carlberg posted 13 saves.

Panthers fall to Floyd

FLOYDS KNOBS — Jennings County dropped a 5-0 HHC decision Saturday at Floyd Central.

Dreagen Ison recorded eight saves for the Panthers (1-13, 0-6).

Olympians go 2-2

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus East lost to Avon 25-17, 25-12 and beat perennial power Cathedral 25-19, 25-15 and New Albany 25-14, 24-26, 15-12 before falling to Center Grove 25-18, 25-10 to finish fourth in Saturday’s Cathedral Invitational.

Allison Mack pounded 26 kills, Madyson Foster recorded 72 assists, CJ Clausen had five blocks, Keeleigh Kikendall notched 31 digs and Cadance Gilley served six aces to lead the Olympians (7-13).

Clausen also added 22 kills, Regann Jessee had five blocks and Mack contributed 25 digs. Kikendall and Reece Whitehead each served three aces.

North takes sixth

MUNCIE — Columbus North beat perennial power Muncie Central 29-27, 25-18 before falling to Mt. Vernon 25-15, 25-14; Wapahani 25-21, 25-23 and Elkhart Memorial 25-19, 32-30 to finish sixth in Saturday’s Muncie Central Invitational.

Agustina Fainguersch led the Bull Dogs (7-13) with 16 kills and three aces. Emma Tynan pounded 16 kills, Lily Meyercord recorded 53 assists, Sarah Bennett had eight block assists, Maddy Sebahar notched 64 digs and Jalynn Reardon served three aces.

Crusaders win bracket

CALUMET —Columbus Christian won the Silver Bracket in Saturday’s Calumet Invitational after going 0-1-1 in its pool.

The Crusaders fell to Grace (Kankakee, Illinois) 25-20, 25-20 and split sets with Goshen Christian 25-23, 10-25 in pool play. In the Silver Bracket, Columbus Christain beat Heritage Hall 25-20, 25-22; HSRC 25-19, 25-22 and Trinity (Kankakee, Illinois) 25-19, 25-9.

Mayah Schundelmeir recorded 44 kills, two blocks, 19 digs and 11 aces; and Lauren Hunnicutt had 30 kills, one assist block, 25 digs and eight aces for the Crusaders (18-2-1). Madison Henderson added 25 kills, one solo and one assist block, 39 digs and five aces; and Hannah Stair tallied one kill, 96 assists, 23 digs and 21 aces.

Also for Columbus Christian, Ellie Ridder contributed 10 kills, an assist block, 12 digs and eight aces. Michaela Schundelmier notched 16 kills, 24 digs and seven aces; and Kayla Jones added 20 digs.

Knights top Eagles

BRAZIL — Brown County came close in the first set Saturday, but Northview posted a 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 victory.

Mekenzie Dunnuck pounded six kills, Maggie Redmond recorded 10 assists, Shea Keller had four blocks, Baelyn Koester and Chloe Lee each notched eight digs and Marley Nickels served three aces to lead the Eagles (11-5). Lee added five kills.

Cougars capture title

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran beat Jennings County 25-22, 25-18 in the championship match of Trinity’s Cougar Cup after both teams had won their first two matches on Saturday.

Trinity downed Purdue Polytechnic 25-6, 25-7 and Indianapolis Metropolitan 25-7, 25-7. The Panthers topped Polytechnic 25-8, 25-5 and Metropolitan 25-4, 25-5.

Hannah Sabotin led the Cougars (20-8) with 21 kills and seven blocks. Bailey Reynolds recorded 37 assists, Kamzi Gross notched 20 digs and Paige Lawrence served seven aces.

For Jennings (8-13), Mary Leahigh and Abi Vogel each pounded six kills, Liz Ertel recorded 12 assists, Marley Stearns had six blocks, Karlee Madinger tallied nine digs and Cassidy Mull served six aces.

Lancers get first win

GREENFIELD — Edinburgh won for the first time this season in going 1-3 on Saturday at Greenfield-Central’s Cougar Challenge.

The Lancers fell to New Haven 25-6, 25-12 and Greenfield-Central 25-6, 25-6 before downing Lighthouse 25-7, 25-10. Edinburgh (1-23) dropped its final match to Anderson 25-15, 15-25, 15-13.

Jets sweep Mohawks

HOPE — Hauser remained unbeaten in the Mid-Hoosier Conference with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 against Waldron on Friday.

Hannah Johnson pounded 18 kills, Aunaka Wasil recorded 34 assists, Kylie Lock notched 16 digs and Mary Branum served six aces to lead the Jets (14-10, 4-0). Branum also added four assists and nine digs, Shelby Fugate had 14 digs and five aces and Lock tallied 11 kills.

Hawks handle Warriors

PLAINFIELD — The Columbus Hawks needed only three sets to beat the Wabash Warriors 25-10, 25-22, 25-17 on Friday.

Grace Lorimor and Hudson each pounded four kills, Sarah Lorimor recorded eight assists, Grace Lorimor and Lucy Herridge each had a block assist, Elisabeth White and Ava Farnsley each notched two digs and White and Hudson each served five aces for the Hawks (2-2). Lucy Herridge added three kills.

Panthers claim 11th

INDIANAPOLIS — Jennings County finished 11th in Saturday’s Roncalli Regional with a 388 at Smock. No. 4 Carmel (314), No. 1 Zionsville (318) and No. 6 Guerin Catholic (327) claimed the three qualifying spots to next weekend’s state finals.

Peyton Whitehead led the Panthers with an 89. Ellie Hearne carded a 95, Sydney Campbell added a 100, Destiny Joray shot 106 and Annie Ertel had a 118.

Eagles come in 14th

MONTGOMERY — Brown County finished with 14th a 409 in Saturday’s Washington Regional at Country Oaks. No. 2 Evansville North, Evansville Memorial and No. 14 Bedford North Lawrence claimed the three state-qualifying berths.

Ashley Masteller led the Eagles with an 89. Allison Stogsdill carded a 99, Ainslie Winton added a 109, Taylor Poling shot 112 and Abby Padgett had a 134.

Panthers pummel Spartans

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County picked up its second win of the season Friday night, a 31-6 homecoming victory against Connersville.

Justin Brogdon ran for two touchdowns, and Drew Goins ran for one. Jared Corya caught a halfback pass from Owen Deaton, and Dylan Boswell kicked a 39-yard field goal on the final play of first half.

Brooks Wathen carried 16 times for 92 yards for the Panthers (2-4). Aaron Martin took over at quarterback and went 7 for 11 for 80 yards. Lance Bailey moved from quarterback to outside linebacker and was the team’s second-leading tackler.

Royals rally past Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur took an early 7-0 lead on a quarterback keeper by Wyatt Gatewood Friday night, but Eastern Hancock scored 41 unanswered points to claim a 41-7 victory.

“We came out on the first drive, and everything clicked,” South Decatur coach Garry Sauley said. “Whatever we did the first series, it’s typical of what we’ve been doing.”

The Cougars (2-4) drove into Royals territory twice in the second quarter, but turned the ball over on downs at the 10-yard line and fumbled on their next possession.

Gage Mings ran for 94 yards, and Jacobi Shook added 92 yards on the ground. Gatewood finished 6 of 11 for 49 yards.
