City extends contract with health plan administrator

Columbus has extended a contract with a third-party administrator overseeing the city’s health insurance plan.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a one-year extension with SIHO, which administers the city’s self-funded insurance plan. The original three-year contract with SIHO was set to expire Dec. 31, said Jamie Brinegar, city finance director.

Brinegar said the city’s administrative costs will go up by $60,000, but the city will see $180,000 worth of savings due to pharmacy rebates through CVS/Caremark, which serves as its pharmacy benefit manager. Health insurance premiums will remain the same for city workers next year, he said.

Currently, 411 city employees and another 1,000 family members are covered under the city’s health insurance plan. Columbus plans to seek bids next year for a third-party administrator to oversee the plan, Brinegar said.

The Columbus Board of Works also approved a contract with Columbus resident Traci Roe to provide door security at Columbus City Hall this weekend during Ethnic Expo, which is held on and adjacent to city property. Roe will be paid $15 per hour on Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. for an amount not to exceed $225, according to the contract.

Clerk-Treasurer Luann Welmer said money used to pay Roe for her services will come out of the city’s Ethnic Expo budget.
