Letter: Lake better choice than Pence for Congress

The current election is a pivotal one for our state and our nation. Every eligible voter should be planning to vote.

This year, the ballot includes an opportunity to vote for our new 6th District representative in the U.S. Congress. The Democratic candidate, Jeannine Lee Lake, is an Indiana native from Muncie. She beat multiple people out of the Democratic primary and has now even earned support from several Republicans, though she is a Democrat. Jonathan Lamb, for example, who ran against Greg Pence in the Republican primary, has put his support behind her.

Mrs. Lake’s husband is a well-known pastor, and she has been traveling all over this very large district to meet as many of us as possible, including going to churches wherever she’s been invited. She is a smart, hardworking, thoughtful Hoosier with experience serving on a variety of boards over the years as she and her husband raised their family. In contrast, Greg Pence is running on his brother’s name, and refusing to debate Mrs. Lake. He has been holding his fundraisers in New York City and Washington, D.C., and provided no thoughts of substance about the concerns of Hoosiers, other than to say that he will vote for his brother and Trump every time — including supporting those tariffs that have been driving down the prices on our farmed products!

Greg Pence, Kiel Bros. president at the time it went bankrupt, still has not accounted for his role in events causing taxpayers like us to have to fund water and soil cleanups, including at sites in the Columbus area. Mr. Pence is not a person who can represent us well. We need someone who will think, who will listen to the people of our town, who will represent our interests in Congress, even if that means standing up to the administration on occasion. We do not need someone who will blindly toe a line and shut us out. Please vote, and vote for Jeannine.
