Storage shed destroyed by fire

Columbus firefighters are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed a storage building on Union Street.

Firefighters were sent to 900 block of Union Street at 4:37 a.m. after a neighbor on California Street reported a fire near the alley, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, they found a wood storage shed fully-engulfed in flames behind a home at 926 Union St., Wilson said.

The shed was at the rear of the rental property, away from other structures, he said. Portions of the approximately 8-foot by 10-foot building had collapsed and firefighters had the fire out within minutes.

The rental property is owned by Phillip and Lisa Buster of Columbus, Wilson said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, Wilson said. Investigators determined that there was no electric utility service to the building. Damages are estimated at less than 1,000 dollars.

Agencies assisting at the scene include the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health EMS and Duke Energy. No injuries were reported.

The Columbus Fire Department has responded to three undetermined detached storage building fires in this area since August, Wilson said. Firefighters are asking anyone who sees anything suspicious to report the activity to 911.

The fire department is also asking that tenants and owners make sure storage building doors are secured.
