City OKs demolition, condemnation orders

Columbus has approved a demolition order of a home in the city and the condemnation of a second residence.

The Columbus Board of Works on Tuesday approved a demolition order for 2143 23rd St. after a request was made by Fred Barnett, city code enforcement officer.

Barnett said the property is currently owned by Fifth Third Bank, which will be responsible for the costs of demolition.

However, the bank has the right to appeal the demolition order to the Board of Works, but Barnett said he will give the bank 30 days to have the property torn down. If it fails to do so, then the city would be responsible for the costs of demolition and would put a lien on the property, Barnett said.

The cost for the city to demolish the property is estimated at $10,000 and would be paid out of the city’s unsafe housing fund. The Columbus Board of Works also approved a separate condemnation order for a property located at 51 Rio St.

The owner of the property, Travis Mouser, agreed to the property being condemned, Barnett said. The home has caught fire three times in the past four years with the most recent incident in January of this year, he said.
