Help city assess bike plan: Steering committee spots open

City officials are seeking members from the public to serve on a steering committee to help update the city’s bicycle and pedestrian plan.

The Columbus-Bartholomew County Planning Department is seeking 12 to 15 members from the community to update the plan, which was adopted in 2010, said Emilie Pinkston, senior planner with the city.

Individuals who serve on the committee will help identify key issues related to bicycle and pedestrian mobility, offer comments and opinions as new ideas are presented and provide feedback on draft planning documents.

Residents from the city of Columbus or individuals within two miles of the city limits can apply for a seat on the committee.

The committee will meet five times throughout 2019 with meetings led by Indianapolis-based Rundell Ernstberger Associates, which was hired by the city to complete an update of the bicycle and pedestrian plan. The project will cost $95,500 and is being funded using federal Metropolitan Planning Organization money, Pinkston said.

The plan update will include recommendations for improving and expanding the existing bicycle and pedestrian and detailed design guidelines for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

In addition, a wayfinding strategy and signage system and identification bicycle and pedestrian network will be included in the plan, along with identifying locations and the type of lighting, according to the city. The plan is expected to be completed next year, Pinkston said.
