North, Trinity swimmers headed to state; East sets school records

Columbus North qualified for state in five events, Trinity Lutheran junior Rachel Sabotin is headed back in two and Columbus East set two more school records in Saturday’s North Sectional girls swimming finals.

The Bull Frogs finished second as a team with 398 points, trailing only defending champion Bloomington South’s 439. The Olympians finished fifth with 226.

North junior Betsy King won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.06 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.97. She avenged losses to Bloomington South’s Kristina Paegle in the Conference Indiana meet in both races.

“I went a lot faster,” King said. “Personally, conference wasn’t the greatest meet for me, and I took that and tried to make it positive going into today.”

Junior Olivia Morlok won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.25. She then finished second behind Sabotin in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.55, which was under the state standard.

“It’s exciting because I’ve never gone (to state) in the 200 free before,” Morlok said. “So to be able to win it, that’s exciting.”

Sabotin won the 500 freestyle in 4:59.69. Earlier in the day, she captured the 200 individual medley in 2:03.68.

Sabotin, who set a sectional record in the 200 freestyle last year, switched to the 200 IM this year.

“I really felt like I wanted to do something new,” Sabotin said. “I was really happy with how I swam, especially for being the first year doing it. We kind of rested less for this meet than we have in past years, so I’m really happy that I was able to swim those times going into state. I’ll hopefully have a good seed and will be able to drop more time.”

North’s King, sophomore Riddhi Garg, junior Erica Samuel and Morlok also advanced by winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.25. The same quartet finished second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:41.49 and will await a potential callback in that event.

The Bull Frogs’ Karlie Brown took second in the 100 buttefly in 1:00.99. Ella Anderson was third in the diving competition with 323.65 points to advance to Tuesday’s Bloomington North Diving Regional.

“It was a great day,” North coach Logan Schaefer said. “Our team performed at our highest when it mattered the most. I couldn’t be prouder of them for that.”

East’s Karissa Miller, Marin Wieneke, Maggie Johnson and Jennifer Utterback set a school record in finishing second in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.31. Wieneke finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.78, breaking the school record she set in Thursday’s preliminaries.

Miller, Utterback, Johnson and Elizabeth Proffit finished second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.47.

“We had really good swims and really good (time) drops today,” East coach Jill Arnholt said. “I’m really proud of Maggie Johnson. She had a tough lineup in the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle and then coming back in the 200 free relay. All the girls did really good and left it all in the pool today.”
