BCSC board votes to increase school lunch prices next fall

Families in Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will pay a little bit more for their students’ school lunch beginning next fall.

BCSC school board members voted Monday to increase school lunch prices by 10 cents per meal corporation-wide.

Elementary school lunches will increase from $2.60 to $2.70; secondary school lunches will increase from $2.70 to $2.80; and adult lunches will increase from $3.40 to $3.50.

Superintendent Jim Roberts said it’s common to see a slight change in lunch costs each year because schools are federally mandated to gradually increase their prices to meet the national average, which changes annually.

The intent is to ensure sufficient funds are provided to the food service account for paid lunches.

“We receive federal reimbursement for our free and reduced lunches,” Roberts said. “What the federal government wants to ensure is we aren’t maintaining healthy balances simply because of collecting dollars from the federal government – that there are dollars being paid appropriately from the community, too.”
