Services and studies

Dayspring Church Apostolic — Worship begins at 11:15 a.m. at the church, 2127 Doctors Park Drive, Columbus.

On Sunday, the church will be inspired by the message, “Hanging Up Martha, For A Mary Mind,” which is taken from Luke 10:41-42, where Jesus shares, “…Mary hath chosen that good part …”

Every mother will receive a free gift.

The Sunday education session starts at 10 a.m. and covers “The Gospel: Faith in Christ,” as shared in Galatians 3:15-25.

Bible study will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and takes a deep dive on the message from the previous Sunday.

Prayer of Power starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and is preceded with requests and instructions on prayer. The Celebrate Recovery session starts at 6:30 p.m. for about an hour.

Ignite is the Youth Growth Session that happens every third Friday.

Fairlawn Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. led by the Rev. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, followed by fellowship time.

Child care is available during Sunday services and second hour studies.

A men’s breakfast is 7:30 a.m. the second Saturday of every month for men of all ages.

The Last Friday’s Bluegrass event is 7:30 p.m. the last Friday of every month. All are welcome to bring an instrument and play along or simply enjoy the music.

Collections and donations for Love Chapel are peanut butter and jelly in May and canned fruit in June.

First Presbyterian Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 512 Seventh St., Columbus. On Mother’s Day, the church will give God thanks for our mothers and all who have nurtured us in life and in our faith journey. The sermon will be based on Acts 13:1-3; 14:8-18, and it will be titled “Sent out.” There will also be a sixth-grade recognition and an appreciation for our teachers in the children’s classes and activities. The church’s children will lead us in worship.

Infant and toddler care is available from 9:15 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays, and a second men’s support group of working-age men meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals, offered 5 p.m. Friday, with entry through the glass doors on Franklin Street.

The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — On Sunday at the 9 a.m. Traditional Service and the 11 a.m. Celebration Service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “What Jesus Left Behind: A Plan,” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus. The scripture will be Philippians 2:1-11 and Micah 6:8.

Sunday school for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m. Child care is available during both services.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday service will be led by the Rev. Wes Jones, senior pastor, at the church, 5300 E. 25th St., Columbus.

On Thursdays, Cub Scout Pack 588 will meet when events are scheduled and Boy Scout Troop 588 will meet at 7 p.m.

Garden City Church of Christ — Pastor Brian Gilroy is the lead minister and Pastor Brian Graves is the family life minister.

From 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through May 13, the small group “Hope Beyond Today” is starting at the church. This group has been developed by those who lost loved ones and hopes to provide hurting people with practical ways to deal with their pain as a result of their life-changing loss. Contact the church or sign up at the welcome center in the church.

Grace Lutheran — The Rev. John Armstrong will deliver the message, “In the grip of Jesus,” based on John 10:22-30. Worship begins at 8 and 10:30 a.m. with children’s Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.

“Searching the Scriptures” continues at 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with a detailed look at Communion. All are welcome.

The International Friendship Center at Grace will gather from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday for an early Memorial Day pitch-in.

Light of Life Lutheran — Bible study will be 4 p.m. May 19 at The Commons, 300 Washington St., Columbus. It will take place in the Xenia Miller Conference Room located on the second floor.

The study topic will be: “Why Is The World So Crazy?” The Bible study will be led by Pastor Scott Miller from Light of Life Lutheran Church. Light of Life is a confessional Lutheran Church that holds strongly to every word of the Bible as the word of God. The study will last about an hour. Study materials will be provided. All are welcome.

Memorial Baptist — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m., at 2320 Seventh St., Columbus.

Sunday school classes for all ages follow at 10:45 a.m. There are programs for both children and youth as well.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Sunday service is at 10 a.m.; it is the fourth Sunday of Easter. Sunday school is at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m. Pastor Kirby Rupp will deliver the message, “His Vision Clarified,” with readings from Acts 9:36-43; Psalm 23; and John 10:22-30.

Wednesday Bible study will be at 6 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist — At 10 a.m. on Sunday, Rev. Roger Bertschausen will present his sermon, “In Praise of the God of Dirt.” The sermon theme for May is grounding. What could be more grounding than dirt? The sermon, centered on the late Mary Oliver’s poem “One or Two Things,” explores dirt, butterflies, eternity, the divine and the Buddha.

Bertschausen is the executive director of the UU Partner Church Council and the grandfather of Holiday Cable. He previously did parish ministries at UUCCI (1988-89) and the Fox Valley UU Fellowship in Appleton, Wisconsin (1990-2015).

St. Paul Lutheran — At the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message, “Knowing and Being Known,” based on John 10:22-30 Sunday at the church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus. This Sunday is Good Shepard Sunday.

On May 19, Pastor Bauman will present on the topic “Lutheran: What does this Mean?” in the Fellowship Room from 1:30 to 3 p.m. All are invited to attend.

Petersville United Methodist — At the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday, the Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will deliver the message “Freedom to Rise Again.” Scriptures from Acts 9:40-41 will be shared by Karen Mize, liturgist for the month of May, at the church, located at 2781 N. County Road 500E, Columbus. Special music will be provided by a men’s choir to honor the mothers of the church as Mother’s Day is celebrated. Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon.

A time of fellowship will follow the service.

The Baker’s Dozen study group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the home of Larry and Connie Nolting. The Journey study class also meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Chris Kimerling’s home. New members are always welcome to both classes.

The “Sit ‘n Stitch” group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Nolting home. Choir practice is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and the Prayer Group will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Westside Community — At 10 a.m. Sunday, Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at the church, at State Road 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard, Columbus. The children’s program for children of all ages through sixth grade begins at the same time.

Pastor Aud will continue the four-week follow-up video series titled “A Case for Easter,” featuring Lee Strobel. This study will be on Wednesday nights from 7 to 8 p.m. through May 15.

Events

Old Union United — At 8 a.m. on Sunday, there will be a Mother’s Day Breakfast.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The open market will be the first Saturday of each month May through October. Local artisans will be set up plus food booths and produce booths. If you are interested in renting a booth contact Kim Rutan in the church office.

The church is launching a Celebrate Recovery program with meetings on Sunday evenings beginning this Sunday. A meal will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting begins at 6 p.m. The church will provide child-care services with safe care givers. All are welcome.

The annual fish fry event is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18, and will include a silent auction and free-will garage sale. Orders can be taken for pick-up for the meal.

First United Methodist — On May 19, FUMC will have the final Sunday Night Connections meeting of the school year. Dinner starts at 5 p.m., and people can stay to enjoy family game night. Bring a favorite game to share

At 7 p.m. May 31, FUMC will present David K. Lamb on the organ. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The concert, part of the Fridays@First series, will be in the sanctuary, and is free and open to the public.

Garden City Church of Christ — The Incredible Race Vacation Bible school for children age 4 through sixth grade is set for June 9-16. Sessions will be 6-8:30 p.m. and will include dinner.

Kids will participate activities to uncover clues and attempt challenges as they fill score cards. Messages will include the concept that all people all part of the same race — the human race — and all part of the same family from Adam and Eve.

South Central Indiana Christian Men’s Fellowship — At 6:30 p.m. May 28, there will be dinner at the Flat Rock Christian Church, 2854 W. Pope St., Flat Rock. The meal will include fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, green beans, dessert and drinks. At 7:15, there will be a meeting. The Rev. Ron Bridgewater of East Columbus Christian Church will be the speaker.
