Stewart takes midget car feature win at Rushville

Colton Lucas of Columbus won the clone 340 division feature event on Sunday at the Jennings County Outlaw Karts in North Vernon.

Tony Stewart returned to one of his home tracks on June 27 when the Columbus native picked up the feature win in the UMRA King of the TQ Midgets main event at the Rush County Fair in Rushville.

Stewart, who will be racing on Tuesday in the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair event, won over Anthony Lawrence, Matthew Hedrick, Austin Nigh and Cory Clay at Rushville. Tuesday’s racing will begin at 7 p.m.

The June 26 race at Rushville went to C.J. Leary over Joey Paxson, Emerson Axsom, Tate Martz and Matt Lux.

The series participated on June 29 at Brownstown Speedway, with Johnny Goff scoring the win, holding off Joey Paxson for the victory. Matt Lux was third, with Cory Clay and Anthony Lawrence completing the top five.

Lucas wins at North Vernon

Colton Lucas of Columbus won the clone 340 division when the Jennings County Outlaw Kart Racing hosted its biggest field of karts this season on June 30. Other division winners were Zoey Watkins, Parker Perry, T.J. Garris, Jordan Hener, Kevin Cunningham, Robert Doyle and Skyler Cohee. The track located at the Jennings County 4-H Fairgrounds in North Vernon will be idle on Sunday, with its next scheduled event set for July 14.

Cummins wins at Brownstown

Kyle Cummins won the MSCS Sprint Car feature event on June 29 at Brownstown. For Cummins, it was his second win of the season at Brownstown. He captured the “No-Way Out 40” earlier in the season. Trailing Cummins across the finish line was Carson Short, Justin Grant, Jordan Kinser and Dakota Jackson.

Marty O’Neal took the victory in the pro late models over Zack Burton, Shelby Miles, Steven Godsey and Tyler Collins.

Rick Gumm remained undefeated this season in the pure stock class, winning the feature over Zachary Stalker, Ryan Layman, Keaton Streeval and Kobe Derringer.

Mike Marlar won the Summernationals race for late models at Brownstown on June 27. Darrell Lanigan chased down Marlar at the end, but finished in second by one-car length. Scott James finished third, followed by Bobby Pierce and Billy Moyer.

Nick Hoffman was victorious in the modified feature race over Tyler Nicely, Ryan Thomas, Kenny Wallace and Devin Gilpin.

Matt Boknecht took the super stock main event over Josh Boller, Tim Schumpe, Tim Eddelman and Steve Hollars.

Brownstown will be racing tonight with a super late model special when the MARS Racing Series comes to town for a $5,000-to-win event. Also on the docket will be modifieds, super stocks and pure stocks. For further info, visit brownstownspeedway.com.

Twin Cities in action tonight

After being idle on June 29, Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon picks back up tonight with its 2019 racing schedule, with the Mark Clark Memorial for super stocks. Also racing will be crate late models, pure stocks, hornets and 305 RaceSaver sprints. For more info, visit twinctitestrack.com.

Lawrenceburg special tonight

Columbus native J.J. Hughes picked up his second sprint car feature win of the season on June 29 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Hughes won earlier this season at Twin Cities. Trailing Hughes across the finish line were Dallas Hewitt, Nick Bilbee, Dickie Gaines and Joss Moffatt.

Matt Hamilton captured the open wheel modified feature race over Kyle Schornick, Jason Hollon, Jeff Koz and Chris Ullery.

Paragon Speedway results

Jadon Rogers won the sprint car feature on June 28 at Paragon Speedway. A.J. Hopkins was second, followed by Bill Rose, Jordan Kinser and Josh Cunningham.

Greg Garrison won the hornet feature over Chris Hillman Jr., Alex Wilson, Owen Cosman and A.J. Hobbs.

Josh Boller took the top honors in the super stock main event over Tucker Chastain, Steve Peeden, Chris Hillman and Justin Massie.

Mike McKinney won the open wheel modified feature over James Walters, Jordan Wever, Jeff Deckard and Jake Leitzman.

This week in racing history

From 60 years ago this weekend in 1959 at Columbus Speedway, Bobby Baker won the 100-lap feature race over Gene Petro, Orval Yeadon, Johnny Baker and Bill Mitchell.

On this weekend in 1969, Brownstown Speedway held a 250-lap feature race, with Don Hobbs winning over Pete Willoughby, Jim Curry, Kenny Baker and Jim Reichenba.

From 50 years ago on July 4, 1969, Dick Gaines won the feature at Bloomington Speedway over Bob Kinser, Bobby Black, Allen Barr and Calvin Gilstrap.

Also from this weekend in 1969 at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, the feature winner was Bill Kimmel over Mack Pace, Gene Sutton, Carl Collins and Johnny Baker.

From July 4, 1979 at Brownstown, it was Ira Bastin taking the late model feature over Paul Crockett, Pete Willoughby, Dennis Boknecht and Kenny Simpson. Sam Cooper was victorious in the hobby stock feature over Steve Sutliff, Bobby Carrier Sr., Cooley Singer and Larry Harris.

From 40 years ago in 1979 at Paragon Speedway, it was Butch Wilkerson taking the win over Louie Mann, Tony Solomito, Bobby Adkins and Larry Martin.

From this weekend in 1979, Twin Cities held two racing events on July 4 and 7. The July 4 feature went to John Sparks over Dee Kramer, Tommy Day, Ross Smith and Russ Petro. The hobby stock feature went to Tony Hubbard over Randy Gilland, Richard Hampton, Ron Homas and Bill Cash. On July 7, the winner was Russ Petro over Tom Wieck and Powell Ballard.

From 30 years ago in 1989 at Brownstown, the late model feature winner was John Gill over Jim Curry, Steve Barnett, Paul Shafer and Gary Barrow. Joe Johnson won the street stock feature over Scott Patman, Earl Plessinger, Tom Seadler and Mike Fields. The two bomber feature races were won by Bob Schrader and Clifton Barron.

From 20 years ago in 1999 at Lawrenceburg Speedway, the sprint car feature winner was Rusty McClure over Jack Hewitt, Jason Knoke, Michael Lang and Joe Roush. Josh Shaw won the modified main event over Daryl Herbert, Kerry Norris, Ron Jolliff Jr. and Tom Doerflein.

Also from this weekend in 1999 at Bloomington, it was John DeMoss winning the modified feature over Jack Taylor, Adam Sasser, Levi Godsey and Ray Humphrey. Gregg O’Neill captured the street stock feature eover Lee Hobbs, Terry Arthur, Gerald Todd and Cory Brown.

In 1999 at Brownstown, Don O’Neal won the late model feature over Mark Barber, Kevin Claycomb, Scott Smith and Jim Curry. Tim Clark took the street stock feature over Mike Fields, Rusty Smiley, Trent Niflis and Joe Johnson. The bomber feature went to Sam Chastain over Charlie Stevens Jr., Larry Harris, Matt Bex and Robbie Palmer.
