Going Low / Former East golfer leads city tournament after first-round 65

Tom LaBarbera tees off on No. 4 during the first round of the City Golf Tournament at Greenbelt Golf Course in Columbus, Indiana, Saturday, July 20, 2019.

A lot of low numbers were posted in the opening round of the men’s city tournament Saturday at Greenbelt Golf Course.

Adam Krebs, a 2015 Columbus East graduate, and Tony Wilks were the only two to post red figures. Krebs fired a 5-under-par 65, and Wilks carded a 66.

“I hit a lot of balls close to the green off the tee and was able to get up and down quite a bit,” Krebs said. “Today was a lot of fun.”

Krebs currently is attending Purdue and studying engineering and has one semester left to finish in the fall. He hopes to land a full-time position with Cummins after graduation.

Krebs hasn’t played competitively since his graduation at East, but still plays casually in some leagues and with his family. This is his first time playing in the city tournament after a four-year hiatus.

Wilks is competing for the second time in the city tournament.

“The golf course looked good, and these guys have done a good job. (Greenbelt pro) Keith (VanDeventer) has got a great facility. It’s was an enjoyable round today,” Wilks said.

Krebs and Wilks have separated a tiny gap from the rest of the field. Bryce Turner, a 2017 Columbus North grad and incoming junior at St. Francis; Drew Smith, a 2019 North grad and incoming freshman at Hillsdale (Michigan); Eric Grider and 2016 East grad Austin Proffitt all finished with rounds of even-par 70.

Zach Schiavello, Ike Brinson and Paul VanDeventer all shot 71. Corey Burton and Wiley Umphress are at 72.

In the senior men’s tournament, Ed Settle leads with a round of 76, two shots better than Larry Pushor. Jeff Caldwell, Dan Londerbee and Steve Chinn posted scores of 87, 88 and 90, respectively.

The city golf tournament organizers condensed the event from two weekends to one this year with increased prizes in hopes to attract more golfers. However, signups for the tournament were low heading into the week.

A total of 52 golfers participated in the men’s and senior men’s tournament, with a lot of the golfers signing up at the last minute. Forty-nine golfers were in the field last year.

“We have a lot of great golfers here in town. I’d like to see more of us out here, and I know it’s tough with families, and having it two days makes it much easier for people, especially myself,” Wilks said. “Hopefully, this is something they can start building. I would like to see it, and I’m sure the golf courses would like to see it.”

Today’s final round will be flighted and will be played at Otter Creek.
