School continues as normal at Central — police say no credible threat exists

It is business as usual at Central Middle School today after Columbus police officers found no credibility to a potential threat to the school.

Central Middle School administrators were notified by a staff member Tuesday evening that a student had sent a message on social media indicating they had heard about a potential threat that would take place Wednesday at Central Middle School, according to an email sent to Central Middle School parents Wednesday.

School resource officers were immediately contacted and worked with Columbus Police Department to interview any students involved in the situation, the email read. CPD closed the investigation after interviews were held and determined that no credible threat existed.

Additional school resource officers were on site today as reassurance of safety.

Columbus police issued a statement on its Facebook page about the investigation at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. The statement: As of Tuesday night, officers had not confirmed any credible threat to students or staff at Central Middle School, according to Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. Several rumors and false, inaccurate information is being shared online, Harris said.

BCSC also issued a statement on Facebook Tuesday: “BCSC is working closely with CPD and our school resource officers on this situation. We will update our schools and staff should more information be communicated to us from our local law-enforcement partners.”

In a Facebook post at 7:07 a.m. Wednesday, BCSC said, “Central Middle School expects another good day and to see additional SROs (school resource officers) this morning. No credible threat was identified.”
