Services and studies

Dayspring Church Apostolic — Worship begins at 11:15 a.m. at the church, 2127 Doctors Park Drive, Columbus.

On Sunday, the church will be inspired by, “Transformation or Desecration?” This is taken from Romans 12:-2, “…be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed …”

Every visitor will receive a free gift. The Sunday education session starts at 10 a.m. and covers the story of the Israelites fleeing Egypt as shared in Exodus 5:1-9.

Bible study is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and is a group empowerment study sponsored by Heart Changers International LLC on depression, stress and grief with handout questions. These help build personal empowerment.

Bible study will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and builds on the message from the previous Sunday with handout questions.

Prayer of Power starts at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and is preceded with requests and instructions on prayer. The Celebrate Recovery session starts at 6:30 p.m. for about an hour.

Ignite is the Youth Growth Session that happens every third Friday.

East Columbus United Methodist — Sunday morning fellowship time begins at 9 a.m. in the foyer with beverages and lite snacks at East Columbus United Methodist Church, 2439 Indiana Ave.

Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. Pastor Ann Thomas will bring the message from Luke 16. Children will receive a special message before going to Children’s Church. Sunday School will begin at 10:40 a.m. for all ages and Bible interests.

On Sunday evening at 6 p.m., a special Prayer and Healing service will take place in the chapel to focus on praying over anyone in need of healing spiritually, mentally, physically or emotionally.

Tuesday afternoon Bible study begins at 1 p.m. in the chapel and is beginning a new study on the book of James. Wednesday evening Bible study begins at 7 p.m. in the chapel; the group is studying I Corinthians.

Both Bible studies are led by the pastor and anyone is welcome to join.

The J.A.M. “Jesus And Me” elementary-age (k-sixth grade) youth group will meet on Wednesday at the Youth Center 6-7:30 p.m.

Fairlawn Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. led by the Rev. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, followed by fellowship time.

Child care is available during Sunday services and second-hour studies.

A men’s breakfast is 7:30 a.m. the second Saturday of every month for men of all ages.

The Last Friday’s Bluegrass event is 7:30 p.m. the last Friday of every month. All are welcome to bring an instrument and play along or simply enjoy the music.

First Presbyterian — On Sunday, the congregation will continue the journey through foundational stories of faith, looking at Exodus and the story of Moses. Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. at 512 Seventh St., Columbus.

“Without Shiphrah and Puah there is no Moses” will be the sermon, which will incorporate verses from the first three chapters of Exodus.

The children of the church and the Livin’ by Faith band will lead in worship.

Infant and toddler care is available 9:15 a.m. to noon. The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays, and a second men’s support group (working age men) meets at 6:15 a.m. Mondays.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered Friday at 5 p.m. (please enter through the glass doors on Franklin). The church is an LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — Sunday will be Music Appreciation Sunday. At the 9 a.m. Traditional Service and the 11 a.m. Celebration Service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “The Values By Which We Live: Understanding Worth,” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus.

The scripture will be 1 Timothy 6:6-19. Sunday School for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m. Child care is available during both services.

At 10 a.m. Oct. 5, FUMC will have a “blessing of the animals” ceremony in the green space across from the church at Ninth Street and Lafayette Avenue. Bring your favorite furry or feathered, two-legged or four-legged friend and have them blessed by the Rev. Howard Boles.

Flintwood Wesleyan — On Sunday, the Amplify (non-traditional) service begins at at 9 a.m. with Sunday school classes at 10 a.m. in the regular rooms. The Well (traditional) service starts at 11 a.m. Both services are in the the main sanctuary and led by the Rev. Wes Jones, senior pastor.

The Prayer Team meets at 8 a.m.

Sunday evenings Celebrate Recovery begins with a meal at 5:25 p.m. in The Friendship Center and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the main Sanctuary. The public is invited to attend.

Connections, a ladies’ study group, led by Pastor Teri Jones, will resume in October. Beginning in October, the group will meet the second and fourth Mondays at 10 a.m. in the Friendship Center. The next meeting will be Oct. 14.

In the Beginning, a small group Bible study, meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday in The Friendship Center. New members are welcome to join. The group is studying Genesis.

Wednesday activities begins with a meal at 5:30 p.m. The program, iKids (Ignite Kids) On Fire For Jesus! starts at 6:15 p.m. This program is for kids in Pre-K through the sixth grade. If your child needs transportation, call the church office. The bus will run on Wednesday nights. The prayer team meets at 6:15 p.m. in the Prayer Room. Youth meets at 6:30 p.m. downstairs in the church. Bible study is at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Thursday: Cub Scout Pack 588 will meet when events are scheduled and Boy Scout Troop 588 will meet at 7 p.m.

Garden City Church of Christ — Pastor Brian Gilroy is the lead minister and Pastor Brian Graves is the family life minister.

The church is located at 3245 Jonesville Road, Columbus.

The church is studying a new sermon series called “Acts of God,” related to questions of human suffering.

Sermons include “The Problem of Pain,” on Sunday; “Faithful Despite Betrayal” on Oct. 13; “Faithful Under Temptation” on Oct. 20; “Faithful through Adversity on Nov. 3; “Faithful in Blessing” on Nov. 10; “The Purpose of Pain” on Nov. 17; and “Trusting God When Aging and Grieving” on Nov. 24.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Sunday service is at 10 a.m. Sunday school is at 9 a.m., followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Scriptures for Sunday include Jeremiah 32: 1-3a, 6-15; 1 Timothy 6:6-19; Luke 16:19-31. The message is “A Time of Entitlement.”

On Oct. 5, the church will host the Thankful Hearts in concert.

The church’s second annual Soup Supper will be 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11. Several different soups and a variety of desserts will be served. A free-will offering will be accepted. A “stair chair” from the sanctuary to basement is available.

Petersville United Methodist — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will present her sermon, “Generations of Love: Blessing,” at the 9 a.m. worship service Sunday. Scriptures from John 1:16 will be shared by the liturgist Deb Loper.

The emphasis will center on blessing one another so believers can answer “Yes” to the question, “Have I helped them to be fully alive?”

Teresa Covert will give the children’s sermon and special music will be shared by the choir.

Fellowship will follow the service.

The Monday night Bible study classes meet at 6:30 p.m. Baker’s Dozen meets at the home of Larry and Connie Nolting, and Journey meets at the home of Chris Kimerling.

The Sit and Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Nolting home.

Choir practice is held at 6:30 p.m. at the church Wednesday.

Prayer Time, led by Barb Hedrick, will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday.

St. Paul Lutheran — A Celebration of St. Michael and all angels will be held during regular worship services at 8 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday, with short meditations on festival hymns depicting angels during the church year at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus.

All congregational choirs will participate adding the Early Childhood Ministry students at the 10:45 a.m. service. Family Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. during the Christian Education Hour.

An open house of the Early Childhood Ministry classrooms is set for noon. Vicar Daniel Fickenscher will lead worship at the 2:30 p.m. Spanish service with Sunday school following at 3:30 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — The message at the 10 a.m. service Sunday will be “A Bridge to India(na)” by Dr. T.P. Sasikumar and the Rev. Nic Cable. The discussion will include building bridges in the interfaith community.

The service will celebrate the connection between Hinduism and Unitarian Universalism. There will be special music of a joint choir between HSSI and UUCCI, an interfaith dialogue between Sasikumar and Cable, and a time for questions.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church at the corner of 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard. The children’s program for birth through sixth grade meets at the same time as the 10 a.m. worship service.

WCC offers a number of Bible studies and small groups.

Wilson Chapel Christian Union — Sunday worship service begins at 9:30 a.m. The pastor is Jon Merrifield.

Sunday School classes meet at 10:30 a.m.

Praise Team practice is at 6 p.m. on Monday night.

Faith In Action, a community outreach program, meets at the Family Life Center at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings for a time of prayer before going into the local community to share God’s love.

Wilson Chapel Christian Union church is located on State Road 7, one mile south of the Bartholomew-Jennings county line.

St. Paul Lutheran — An organ concert by assistant organ professor Stephen C. Price, of Ball State University, will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St. at 7 p.m. Oct. 4. All are invited to attend.

Events

East Columbus Christian — The church presents Fuel on Wednesday nights, which includes a free meal and Bible study from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It is located at 3170 Indiana Ave., next to Columbus East High School.

First Lutheran — The church will host an Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting on the third Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The group will be led by Mary Ellen Wyman, the former executive director of the local Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, and will be open to the public.

It is a peer-led group of caregivers who are providing support for those living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. This is not a group for individuals or patients diagnosed with dementia.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The last Open Market for the season will be 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 5. Local artisans will be set up as well as vendors selling food and produce.

The annual Harold Carr Memorial Golf Scramble will be Oct. 19. To sign up early, contact Gary Carter through the church office. More details will be announced.

On Oct. 31, the church will host Trunk-or-Treat during the time established by the city for trick-or-treating.

The church’s 30th annual Open Hearth Craft Show will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 9. Homemade crafts, baked goods, candies, handmade soaps, candles, greeting cards,and many more gifts will be available. There will also be food. Reservations for vendors should be made now. Petersville United Methodist — The church will host a movie night at 7 p.m. Oct. 4. Movie-goers can make s’mores around a bonfire before the movie starts — all ingredients will be provided. Popcorn and lemonade will be served during the film.

The community is invited and attendees should bring lawn chairs.

St. Paul Lutheran — St. Paul Lutheran Church’s annual Harvest Fest will start at 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Schroer Ranch, 9846 E. County Road 50N.

Activities for the afternoon include apple bobbing, hayride and volleyball.

A hymn sing and youth-led devotions will precede the 5:30 p.m. pitch-in meal (meat, hot dogs, drinks and table service will be provided).

All are cordially invited to attend.

Walker Chapel — A soup supper is scheduled for 4:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the church, 9705 S. County Road 100W, Columbus, and will include baked goods, crafts, baskets, handmade wooden items and more.

All are welcome. Donations will be accepted.

White Creek United Methodist — The church will present a talk called “Guns and the Law” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the church, 6730 W. County Road 930S, Columbus.

The discussion will include legal aspects of possession and use of firearms. Presenters will be attorney Jerry Prall and Indiana Conservation Officer Jay Noble. A free dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the presentation beginning at 7.
