City to consider annexing property in Wayne Township for future industrial use

The Columbus City Council will consider two ordinances Tuesday seeking to annex and re-zone nearly 19 acres of vacant land in Wayne Township for future industrial use.

Under the proposed ordinances, a total of 18.97 acres located at the northwest corner of State Road 58 and County Road 300W next to the Woodside Northwest Industrial Park would be annexed, declared part of the city of Columbus and re-zoned from “agricultural: preferred” to “industrial: heavy,” according to a memorandum by Columbus and Bartholomew County planning director Jeff Bergman.

Of the 18.97 acres that would be annexed, 16.83 of them are owned by the Deckard Family Trust, according to Bergman. The annexation would include 2.14 acres of right-of-way on State Road 58 and County Road 300W, the memorandum states.

On Sept. 11, the Columbus Plan Commission voted 9-0 to issue a favorable recommendation to the council for the proposed annexation and re-zoning of the property.

The commission’s favorable recommendation includes commitments to prohibit certain types of industrial activities on the property, widening County Road 300W, requirements on the placement of vehicles and loading areas on the property and other provisions designed to “minimize impacts to immediately adjoining homes.”
