Joy Steinbacher, a receptionist in The Republic newsroom in 1969, was inspired by the shape of whopping Puerto Rico yam to provide it with facial features and a hair ribbon. Skeletal remains found in a shallow grave near Camp Atterbury in 2008 were identified as a 35-year-old resident of Bosnia-Herzegovina who traveled to the U.S. to visit relatives.

Safety concerns and complaints by neighbors and community members of littering and disruptive behavior prompted school officials to examine whether campuses at Columbus’ two high schools should be closed.

Petitions urging withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam were signed by 106 Columbus residents and mailed to President Richard M. Nixon by Columbus Peace Fellowship.
