Area students earn degrees from WGU

The following students received degrees from Western Governors University:

Columbus: Diane Stogdill

Nashville: Rachel Runion

2 students named to Ashland 1girl program

Two Columbus students were named to the 1girl program at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, including Katlin Meek and Elizabeth Simpson.

Meek, a 2017 graduate of Columbus North High School, is majoring in business administration.

Simpson, a 2018 graduate of Columbus East High School, is majoring in intervention specialist early childhood education.

1girl is open to all Ashland University female students with a desire to develop their own leadership skills while enhancing the lives of middle school girls through mentor relationships.

The program seeks to work with middle school girls with the highest need from low-income areas and who are at risk for delinquency. They accomplish this goal through after school programs that use lessons centered on developing critical thinking, public speaking, problem solving, conflict resolution and goal-setting skills.

Applications open for state-funded teaching stipends

Two scholarship opportunities for student teachers are now open, according to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. Applications for the Earline S. Rogers Student Teaching Stipend for Minorities and the Student Teaching Stipend for High-Need Fields are open through Jan. 31.

The Earline S. Rogers Student Teaching Stipend for Minorities is open to minority students who will participate in student teaching or a school administration internship as part of their degree requirements.

The Student Teaching Stipend for High-Need Fields is available to students planning to teach in special education or math at either the middle or high school level. Eligible students can receive up to $4,000 per stipend, or $8,000 if awarded both.

Students have until Jan. 31 to submit the application for each stipend. For instructions on how to apply, visit learnmoreindiana.org/futureteacher.

Additionally, time is running out to apply for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, which provides 200 scholarships for up to $30,000 for aspiring teachers to teach in Indiana for at least five years after graduation. The scholarship application closes Nov. 30. More information is available at learnmoreindiana.org/nextteacher.
