East sweeps Panthers
NORTH VERNON — Columbus East bounced back from its losses to Columbus North on Tuesday by sweeping the boys and girls meets Thursday at Jennings County.
The Olympians won the boys meet 109-47 and the girls contest 128-54.
Marin Wiekene won the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 27.40 seconds) and 100 freestyle (59.77), Karissa Miller took the 200 individual medley (2:27.40) and 100 butterfly (1:12.98) and Ellie Proffitt captured the 50 freestyle (26.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.50) to lead the East girls. Cloe McDonald won the diving competitIon (191.70), Jennifer Utterback took the 500 freestyle (5:57.09) and the Olympians swept the 200 medley (2:05.78), 200 freestyle (1:55.06) and 400 freestyle (4:12.98) relays.
"We got to play around with our lineup tonight and let some girls swim some other events and get times," East girls coach Jill Arnholt said. "Even though they weren’t in their main events, they still swam strong. We’re gearing up for (Saturday’s) Shelbyville Relays."
The Panthers’ Reagan Brown won the girls 100 backstroke in 1:06.48.
The East boys got wins from Mason Curry in the 200 IM (2:17.14), John Roberts in diving (141.45), Justin Borowski in the 100 butterfly (1:06.80), Bryce Eckelman in the 100 backstroke (1:09.50) and Fabio Nihalani in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.80). The Olympians also swept the 200 medley (1:53.72), 200 freestyle (1:55.25) and 400 freestyle (4:09.59) relays.
Jennings’ Danny Hoffman won the 200 freestyle (2:10.31) and 500 freestyle (5:39.05), and Noah McFall took the 50 freestyle (26.25) and 100 freestyle (58.07).
WRESTLING
East falls to Franklin
FRANKLIN — No. 14 Franklin handed No. 13 Columbus East its first loss of the season, a 39-20 decision.
Liam Krueger (106) and Tyler Williams (152) won by major decision for the Olympians. Noah Lykins (113), James Thompson (138), Kade Law (160) and Noah White (182) won by decision.
Law, who was competing for the first time this season after recovering from strep throat, bumped up to 160 to wrestle Tyler Fuqua, a 2018 state qualifier, and won a 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker.
Panthers sweep duals
NORTH VERNON — Jennings County’s No. 1 varsity team won all 14 matches in rolling to a 67-0 win against Switzerland County.
Travis Waltermire (113), Dathan Malone (145), Crayton Morrison (195) and Blake Mitchell (285) all won by pin for the Panthers. Joey Moran (138), Blake Vaught (152), Will Riffel (160), Chris Kiste (170), Owen Bonesteel (182) and Max Brown (220) all won by forfeit. Mike Pemberton (132) won by major decision, and Teagan Johnson (126) won by decision
Jennings’ No. 2 varsity beat Greensburg 54-18. Bryce Barnes (145), Teagan Trotter (160), Sam Bennett (170), Cameron Woodard (182) and Richard Puckett (220) all won by pin for the Panthers. Jenn Ramirez (113), Alexis Giltner (132), Nate Doty (138) and Gavin Bateman (152) all won by forfeit.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Cougars top Lancers
GREENWOOD — Greenwood Christian Academy used a 22-1 first-half run to propel itself to a 73-57 win against Edinburgh.
The Lancers fell to 6-3.
