Cabaret announces star-laden spring season

Jessica Vosk's credits include "Wicked" and "Finding Neverland." Submitted

The ever-popular Columbus Indiana Philharmonic has announced its spring Cabaret at The Commons series, including a date with one returning Broadway and TV star who sold out her 400-seat local concert in slightly more than a week’s time three years ago.

That artist is Megan Hilty, from a range of Broadway shows and television’s “Smash,” who performed a Christmas concert Dec. 1, 2016. This time, she is appearing June 18 with Cheyenne Jackson, whose credits include “All Shook Up,” “Xanadu” and “Aida.”

“People are going to go crazy over that one,” said David Bowden, the Philharmonic’s music director who coordinates elements of the series.

Promotional material mentions that the pair will present “breezy, excitable renditions of your favorite Broadway hits and a few of their multi-hued original songs.”

The rest of new, spring schedule is as follows:

March 5: Jessica Vosk, best known for her performance as the lead role of Elphaba in Wicked, which she recently finished playing on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre. She was Elphaba for Wicked’s 15th anniversary. His concert is expected to include an eclectic mix of musical theatre and pop tunes.

May 14: Telly Leung, best-known for Broadway roles in “Aladdin,” “Rent,” and “Godspell.” Leung presents his solo show while weaving in stories of his Carnegie Mellon University days to a retelling of his immigrant parents’ trip to America.

The cabaret music series, highlighting top-tier performers performing mostly acoustic sets, is a Philharmonic artist-sharing partnership with The Cabaret in Indianapolis. The local orchestra launched the series with a sold-out show in January 2015 with Columbus native and now-Broadway performer Mary Claire King. The series has steadily and regularly attracted top vocal and musical talent from Broadway, television and the movies.

Regular attendees give the series high marks for elements ranging from parking convenience to a chance to mix and mingle with the visiting stars after the performances. Besides local ticket buyers, it has attracted people from surrounding cities, including metro areas such as Cincinnati.

Series attendance has averaged more than 350 people and has been steadily trending upward for some time, according to Philharmonic leaders. The last date with The Broadway Boys last Thursday sold out soon after tickets went on sale.
