Garage fully engulfed; two dogs perish in fire

EDINBURGH — Local firefighters were sent to a structure fire in the 4700 block of W. Compton Drive early Friday morning.

Firefighters arrived at the home at 7:29 a.m., where they found the garage fully engulfed in flames. The fire started to work its way through the attic and into the kitchen and living room, but firefighters were able to prevent fire damage from progressing further in to the bedrooms.

The home sustained heavy smoke and heat damage, along with some water damage, according to German Township Fire Department Deputy Chief Jacob Goodin.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within about 20 minutes and were on the scene for between two and three hours in total.

The owner of the home and her three children were home when the fire started but all got out of the home safely. Two dogs perished in the fire.

Due to the cold weather, an electric space heater was being used to warm the garage where the fire started. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Assisting on scene were the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, Edinburgh Police Department, German Township Fire Department, Clifford Fire Department and Columbus Township Fire Department.
