HOPE — Hauser scored the first four points of the first quarter, the first six points of the second quarter, the first three points of the third quarter and the first four points of the fourth quarter Tuesday night.
Unfortunately for the Jets, the remainder of each of those four quarters belonged to Oldenburg Academy. That allowed the Twisters to claim a 44-30 girls basketball victory.
“I told the girls, they outplayed us,” Hauser coach Chad Evans said. “They wanted it more than we did. I don’t think we competed very well tonight. It’s frustrating.”
After the Jets (6-11) scored the first two baskets of the game, the Twisters (4-13) closed the first quarter on a 17-1 run. Hauser then scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the lead to 17-11, and the Jets were within 24-16 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Kyliegh Parrott to open the third quarter cut the deficit to 24-19, but that was as close as Hauser would get. Oldenburg scored eight in a row and built the lead to 35-21 after three quarters.
“We just kind of went by the wayside,” Evans said. “I’m still trying to teach that killer instinct to get over the hump. You get the momentum going, you just have to keep the gas pedal down.”
Parrott led the Jets with 11 points, while Mel Hasler added nine. Shelby Fugate had six rebounds.
Hauser was plagued by 26 turnovers and 4-of-12 shooting at the free-throw line. The Twisters finished with a 43-30 rebounding advantage, with plenty of their rebounds coming on the offensive end.
“We didn’t do a very good job rebounding,” Evans said. “They killed us on the boards in the first half. We just didn’t capitalize on some things. We weren’t very good at the free-throw line. We missed a lot of layups. It’s one of those games where you can replay it in your head a thousand times, and the result is still going to be the same.”
