Nonprofit agency Sans Souci has teamed with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department to begin distributing toiletries-and-snacks care kits to the area homeless and needy.

Sans Souci staff recently contacted the sheriff’s department and then gathered donations from a variety of sources for the travel-sized items stored in vinyl, rain-proof, and donated Mill Race Marathon bags. As a first step, Sans Souci has assembled 20 bags of the kits, according to Brad Woodcock, the agency’s operations supervisor.

They expect to begin assembling more soon, organizers said.

“This is a good first step forward,” said Maj. Chris Lane, chief deputy with the sheriff’s department.

Lane thought the kits would be a great idea after hearing about the Minnesota State Police having such kits on hand.

“A lot of this will be about building relationships with (needy) people,” Lane said. “Unfortunately, some of the homeless people become victims of crime, but they often are reluctant to approach us about it.”
