Eligible Jennings County High School seniors who attended Hayden Elementary School and are planning to attend college or a vocation trade school have several scholarships available which they can apply for.
Applications can be picked up in the high school guidance office now and need to be returned by March 11.
Apphia Wohrer Gerth Memorial Scholarship
The applicants for this award must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. This award will be given to a senior who had been a member of the Hayden Little Hoosier Historians while they were attending the Hayden Elementary School.
This scholarship was established in memory of Apphia Wohrer Gerth, a former school teacher and one of the founding directors of the Hayden Historical Museum. She took a great interest in the activities of the Little Hoosiers and was one of their biggest supporters.
The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $250.
Pat Sullivan / Rodger Ruddick Honorary
Scholarship
The applicants for this award must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. Applicants must have attended four years or more at the Hayden Elementary School.
Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Bessenger established this scholarship to honor Pat Sullivan and Rodger Ruddick for their continued involvement with the youth of the Hayden and Spencer Township community.
The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $500.
Michael Euler Memorial Scholarship
Applicants for this award must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. They also must have attended four or more years at the Hayden Elementary School.
This award is in memory of Michael Euler, a former Hayden student and the last Spencer Township resident to lose his life while serving his country.
The Hayden High School Alumni Association sponsors this scholarship and the award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $800.
Martha M. Vogel Memorial Scholarship
Applicants for this award must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school and the applicant must have attended four or more years at the Hayden Elementary School.
The family and friends of Martha Vogel, a 1997 Jennings County High School graduate who lost her life in an automobile accident in 1998, established this award with the Jennings County Community Foundation.
A plaque and last year $500 was awarded to two recipients.
John and Alice Wohrer Memorial Scholarship
This award will be given to a senior who had attended four or more years at the Hayden school. Preference will be given to the applicant will has been admitted to a college or junior college with the intention of gaining a degree in the field of education.
This scholarship was established in memory of John and Alice Wohrer, who were great promoters of education in Spencer Township during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the Wohrer descendants from across the country joined together to make this scholarship possible and established the fund with the Jennings County Community Foundation.
The award consists of a plaque and last year’s award was $1,361.06
Marjorie Kehrt Memorial Scholarship
The applicants for this award must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. They also must be a resident of Spencer Township and have attended four or more years at the Hayden Elementary School.
This award was established with the JCCF by the Kehrt estate and is in memory of Ed and Marjorie Kehrt. Mr. Kehrt was an active volunteer in the community, serving on the Spencer Township Fire Dept. as well as other local organizations. Mrs. Kehrt was a long-time cook at the Hayden Elementary School.
This award consists of a plaque and last year’s award was $1,119.43.
