Church asks for return of Black Lives Matter banner

Pastor Nic Cable says a prayer during a rally to commemorate Juneteenth in honor of victims of police brutality at Donner Park in Columbus, Ind., Friday, June 19, 2020. Rally goers listened to speeches and took part in a silent march around the park that lasted for 8 minutes, 46 seconds. That is the amount of time Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on the neck of George Floyd during an arrest, killing him. Mike Wolanin | The Republic

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Black Lives Matter sign was stolen from the front lawn of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus at 7850 W. Goeller Blvd.

Pastor Nic Cable said he noticed the sign, installed about a week ago, missing Tuesday morning.

He said church leaders have not yet reported it to police. But they want whoever took it to know they will not pursue charges if it is returned. And ideally, church leaders would like to have a discussion with the person or people involved.

He said there’s no way currently to know if the theft was done as a prank or something more.

“I don’t want to speculate on that too much,” Cable said. “What matters to us as a congregation is that we uphold what is going on in this country right now as so many people work to overcome racial injustice. And we just want to further a conversation of love and diversity and equity.”
