Walmart and Salvation Army partner for Stuff the Bus

The Columbus Salvation Army will have its annual “Stuff the Bus” donation event this weekend.

From Friday through Sunday, Columbus residents can donate school supplies at the Walmart on Whitfield Drive or the one on Merchant Mile, off Jonathan Moore Pike.

“We will be at the Walmart on Whitfield Drive on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Capt. Amy Tompkins, who leads the Columbus Salvation Army. “But you’ll be able to drop off all of your donations, any time from Friday through Sunday at customer service at both Walmarts when we’re not there.”

Donations can also be made by ordering supplies on the event’s Walmart wish list online. These can be delivered directly to the Columbus Salvation Army at 2525 Illinois Ave., or to the buyer’s address if they wish to deliver the supplies personally.

There is also a text donation option, where a person can donate by texting “HOOSIER” to 24365. Tompkins noted that the destination of the donation may be determined by the zip code of one’s payment card.

Tompkins said that once school supplies have been donated, they will be given out on Aug. 15 at the Columbus Salvation Army from 10 a.m. to noon. The supplies are free and available to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to school supplies, the Columbus Salvation Army will also be giving out other, miscellaneous supplies for children, including phone chargers, earbuds, undergarments, socks, hand sanitizer, disposable masks, cloth masks and individual tissues.

“We’re trying to make sure that all their needs are met,” she said.

Stuff the Bus is an annual partnership between the Salvation Army centers and Walmarts across the country.
